05 suburu legacy blown engine, mmwwaarrgghh

Featured Replies

Well, dunno if people read on another thread but i was having my gaffers suburu legacy for 2 weeks ( he is on holiday ), well last friday the finance director needs 2 new tyres on his BMW estate ( had the M badges inside on the wheel and gear stick ?) but he was off to scotland so he took the suburu legacy, i took his BMW ( can i say that it was fast as foooook for a diesel estate ) any ways i gets a fone call on sunday teatime saying that he had to abondon it on Ilkley moor because.........................he was driving, heard gurggling noise and oil light came on, put oil in, set off, more gurggling and bang, smoke from under bonnet, he got out, opened bonnet to find smoke and oil squirting out all over and him........so it was recovered this morning and now in garage at Rochdale suburu, he has took his BMW back now and i now got Golf ( 56 ) as hire car............

Seems at first glance a push rod or summat has pierced the engine, or summat has damaged the block.......now is this a new engine or a rebuild....

Just thought id share this considering the gaffer is on holiday and now has a duff car, wont be happy for sure........will keep you updated as to the fault.

Any comments welcome, hahahahahahaha

If its pierced the block then its a new engine.

Sounds like it could be oil starvation. Which trim level and engine does (did?!) it have in it?

Chris

that'll be jap crap for ya :D

Shirley it was the finance director wot broke the Legacy?

Spevie , you've nothing to worry about as you weren't driving it at the time of breakage , so a bit of a result really

Oh i arnt worried, i didnt break it as you say, just that i ended up with a Golf ( mmmm seems to have the same storks as the fabia ) but it has nice blue dials...hahaha

Oh and i asked FD if he was gonna mail Mick ( thats my gaffer who has the suburu) mick is in the carrabean at the moment but checking his emails with the cyber cafe on board ship.

he said no at first but depends what the damage is, i said wonr it be on the cars record and sooner or later he will find out, i suggest coming clean ???

something like :- " Oh and by the way Mick when i was thrashing yer car it blew up" hahahaha

spevie

PS, will let you know ASAP on the damage, just for info.

Its a preety solid engine, I have thrased my dads quite hard with no side affects (well other than the need for additional fuel 14mpg not good).

mmm, It's supposed to be a pretty good engine (reliability wise) so I would agree with a previous poster, that it was probably oil starvation, never topped up, got too low, and died. :(

i heard that the Subaru engine doesn't really like to be thrashed i.e. high revs as it will go pop , i know a mates Impreza engine did at a track day

update on the engine........................Rochdale suburu have put a warranty claim into suburu direct to get a NEW ENGINE..... wtf, oh and the FD sent a text this morning to Mick( owner of suburu who is in grenada ?) about the car, he got an email back saying " you had better be f@#ing joking man" and the reply to that from the FD was " dont worry, ita all in hand and enjoy the rest of yer holiday", well as if he can do that now..........hahahahaha

Well at least i wont get the backlash when he comes home..........mmmwwwuuuaaarrrgghhhh

I'd be happy if I needed a replacement engine under warranty - makes long term ownership a better proposition!

Boxer engines are an inherently stronger design than in line or V engines due to the equal distibution of forces (in opposite directions).

Even the old Alfa boxer engines were nigh on indestructable, and believe me, I tried to kill a few of those!!

I tried to kill both my Scoobys and regularly (every day) bounced the car into the red. Seemed to love it and never used any oil either. A great engine, if a tad thirsty (tad being a slight understatement:D ) 911s are renown for there strength and reliability

True but its a contract car, he pays about 320 a month, also when the car gets changed will it look good that a 05 plate suburu has had a new engine.......would you buy it after that, i know its not been thrashed but wot usually happens to ex contract cars anyways, sold cheap or re listed for contract.......dunno.

Will the garage reset the mileage accordingly like delivery mileage only ???

Will the engine have full warranty ( 3 years or so) or will it stay same as warranty on car........

Spevie

PS, i think he has around 18-24 months left with this car before option to change.

Mine too ... shame there were so many mods available though :(

Hire car company foned thia morning said that if they dont get confirmation that i need the car for longer they will charge ME a days rate for every day/ part day usage.

i rang the suburu garage and told them, they said they will sort it out, meanwhile i asked for an update, they said they are investigating as to why there was no oil in the engine ???? oh dear, NO OIL...........sure the FD said he put some in 1hr before it whent bang........he didnt say there was a black line on the road behind him......

Funny thing is my gaffer foned me from holiday and said " WTF has he done to my car" i explained and he said in no uncertain terms that he was a f@#king ba@#ard and gonna trash his BMW when he gets back........i did assure him it would be like a new car when he gets it back and did point out that it could have happened on the way to the airport, he calmed down.......i had to larf tho........will keep informed as the result about the engine....

Spevie, I've heard about a problem like this with another car (different make and model [neither VAG not Subaru]) and what had happened was that the oil filter had blown apart and dumped 4l of oil between the "B" and "G" of the engine going "BANG".

On the title....the mwarggghh...is that like a kiss with a growl touch to it?

Should think of using that on one of my tracks.

MMWWAARRGGHHH, i always like this cos it reminds me of the old Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Christopher Lee movies and corny movies, just before summat happens its a MMWWAARRGGHHH.........

"COME TO LIFE, mmwwwaarrgghhh"

well, i think i'm normal ???

spevie

KEN, i was thinking on the lines of something dumping the oil but FD did not say that the oil was on the black stuff behind him ?????? will let ya know the result.

tbh it might have dumped it a little down the road then the thing gone bang say quarter of a mile later. Modern oils are very lubricating on cold starts so some would have clung to the cylinders etc, before the big bang.

Just look in the local paper and see how many bikers died that weekend, if it's an unusually high number then it probably was leaking oil!!

  • Author

Funny ( not ) you should say that but over tha last week or so there has been a fair few bikers died in crashes up here........

I am sure the FD would be happy to hear that statement.......

Well i got mail this morning from Mick, asking if he could get a impreza as a loan car from suburu, i sent a mail back saying they are loaning him a suburu justy for 2 months, its injection so should be nippy.....hahahahaha not had reply yet but should be funny reply no doubt.....
