Posted:-Did he say if the oil light on before the bang, if yes hes a **** to drive it.

Hi did say that whilst driving ( not sure how fast ) the oil light came on( at this point dont know how far from garage to get oil ) so he bought some oil and put it in, set off again then bang.........so i wreckon he doesnt know if the light was on or off, mind you i think this could be a contributing factore to the decision as to what to do.......

Driving while oil light on and knowing so could be negligence

Driving while oil light on but not seeing it could be non-negligence

just a thought..

Update today:-

The garage ( rochdale suburu )said that they had stripped the engine and taken fotos of all the parts and sent them to suburu for inspection, they requested some more around lunch time but at specific parts in the engine........they are waiting for a decision as to whats next......will be in touch.

Update:-

Called into the suburu garage to get micks coats n stuff ( pick him up from airport in the morning 6am ) and was looking at the broken engine, NEW engine arrives today so should be back on road in 2-3 days.

Now the guy says that a con rod has gone through the block and was very amazed at this cos its very rare on a Legacy but common on the impreza......

All but the block was in the boot of his car, so when they replace the engine, what is replaced exactly, just the block and they re use the turbo n stuff.......???

Depends on the damage, turbo etc should be Ok, With conventional layout engines ie cylinders parallel they will sometimes only replace with a short engine & reuse the old head, not sure with the Scoob as its flat with 2 heads, odds are if the rods gone the heads fooked anyway as little bits of metal will have hit the head at high speed.

Try & get the old rod if you can, makes a great coffe table decoration although they might need it for anaylasis.

If cars close to the end of the warranty try for extra warranty on the work they do

Depends on actual damage done; when my mate hydrauliced the Sierra XR4x4, they literally replaced the engine (so everything from the flywheel to the block front plate) bar the starter motor, manifolds, injection, alternator and pumps was brand new.

I'd expect to be getting new block, crank, rods and pistons at minimum. If there's even a suspicion of oil starvation I'd want new cam(s), valve gear and turbo.

will be making a note of what has been done and ask about warranty, i think it will be me that picks it up cos the hire car in in my name and only me to drive, need to drop the hire car off at suburu garage anyways........will ask if any parts can be taken and will take fotos and post if any look uuueeerrrrrr, ish....

Any warranty work (or work you pay for) will be warranted for a year from the date of completion of work, even if the original vehicles warranty has run out.

Any warranty work (or work you pay for) will be warranted for a year from the date of completion of work, even if the original vehicles warranty has run out.

that may not be so depending on the terms and conditions of the manufacturers original warranty ,

make sure you ask exactly what the cover is on the new parts that have been fitted and whether anything that hasn't been changed will be covered if it fails soon after the engine replacement

Well got the car back today, new block, rest of stuff used like injectors, manifold, alternator n stuff, can only go upto 3k revs for 1000 miles, but it does seem more responsive so will c after the run in period, did smell a bit wierd but thats the newness of it the guy said......

It was due for a service in 300 miles so the garage said still bring it in and do it to keep the service warranty upto date.......

So when you look under the bonnet you see a nice alloy coloured block but grimey parts attached, i told him to get it steam cleaned and it will look like new ????

PS, Mick siad at 60,000 its due for the timing belts changed, it has 4 apparently, that wont be cheap but its done under lease cover.......thank god i dont have one of these posh cars eh.....

spevie

the timing belts should of been replaced when the engine was stripped , so may not need replacing until a higher mileage

4 timing belts?! :o I know the Impreza only had one but it was very long

Chris

2 I can understand on a boxer, but 4!?

It's a has four camshafts.;)

And?...

Most belt-driven inline Twin OHC engines have 1 belt.

1 gigantic, long, enormous, infinite minus a bit, long cambelt

.

2 camshafts per head = 4 camshafts in total.

Yes Amanda, I can understand using 1 belt per bank on a boxer (or a proper OHC V for that matter). I was questioning 1 per shaft when the shafts only work 4 valves each.

At least he spoke to you .... mine just tutted and muttered something under his breath! We ended up getting a specialist to do it after that ;)

Chris

Mine used to offer me a sandwich and a play with his remote controlled car, whilst he replaced my split heatshield (9 of them) and interior clock (8 of them)

My mechanic only ended up fitting shiny uprated bits for me. Didn't even offer me a cup of tea either :rofl:
