To VRS or not to Vrs....that is the question

Hi Guys & Girls

Firstly let me say what a great site this is!

Wonder if you guys could give me some advice???

I'm currently driving an 03 clio 172, but due to the general build quality or lack of it I'm fancing a change. I was thinking about the Fabia VRS (Chipped once run in) how will this compare to what I have now? what is the reliability like of the skodas? Anybody got any experience of high milage fabias? How do they fair?

Any help would be great appreciated.

Cheers Potster

I can't comment on Fab vRS performance as I have never driven it, but Skoda reliability is much better than Renault and the vRS should have no problems doing high mileage especially as it is an oiler. Have driven a high mileage skoda petrol with no problems at all, ran as well at 80K as it did at 10K.

yip skoda are very reliable, my octy has been as reliable as my golf both have never broken down

I had a 50K Fabia TDI before which was running as sweet as it ever had, until I put it on its roof... Reliability should be a plus, if you're used to Renaults... :P

A chipped vRS Fabia will put out 180BHP+ so should be as quick as your 172, but with a fair bit more torque for low down grunt.

Skoda basically use VAG engines.

So how many high milleage VW/Audi's do you see on the road, plenty. There are still loads o' mk1 and mk2 Golfs running around, how many Renault 19, 5, etc do you see? Hardly any.

BTW Diesels improve with age :)

D

fabia vrs chipped would be amazing, torque in such a small car would be phenomenal.

handling probably not as good as your 172.

build quality/dealers much, much better.

VAG diesels go on for ever, still tight at 10k.

go for it!

oh, welcome btw! :D

Hi mate.

As Huck said, knock yourself out :)

I see you joined some time ago last year. Maybe you want to update your profile, or give us a little intro in what you enjoy most. ;)

Hi Potster, I thought your name looked familiar off cliosport. Well I went from a 172 to a valver and now I have ordered a furby vRS as it is more fun than the 2 cars put together but that is IMHO.

Thing is poeple still take the p1ss out of the badge but the last laugh is on them due to skoda drivers paying a lower price and getting a better put together car. :D

Take a test drive mate, I have found the Clio 172 is one of the few cars I struggle to keep up with on the twisty stuff ! ;) Wouldn't want you being disappointed ! But the build quality, reliability etc will be much better :)

Go on do it, you know you ought to :D

Hi Potster

Dont worry about reliability of the diesel mate.

I know of a Fabia 90 that has covered 200,000 miles in 2.5 years i kid you not,

and appart from routine servicing (every 3 weeks!!) it hasnt missed a beat.

Infact it is due for a change in September and Skoda uk are thinking of displaying it to show what the car/engine can do!

Hi Potster,

I also drive a mk2 172 but have just part x'd it for a Fab vrs... I was sick to death of the constant rattles and things going wrong with the car, so I decided to go for the Skoda as the bulild quality is just heaps and heaps better than Reno!! and Its a flying diesel

I must admit that the 172 is a cracking car for handling and power!! But I'm sure that could be sorted out on the Vrs for half the price of my current petrol bills on the 172 !!

John

And so it starts, people ditch the Reno for something a little better built ;)

The Clio 172 is fast no doubt but power isn't everything !

Have you read the latest Evo review of the new Clio 182. Sounds like it is a stormer of a car that they rate as one of the best hot hatched ever!!

So true ChavyBiy, The 172 is a very quick car but also costs a fortune in Fuel Bils:-)

Potster- Get yourself a test drive and see what you think! The only concern I had was the fabia looked pretty small as Im a 6.1 but the fabia is alot roomier than the clio

Maybe but the build quality is sh1te, it will spend more time in a renault garage than your garage. :thumbdwn:

Not to mention the Clio's insurance. I'm selling my Clio (1.2 16V :D) for a Fab vRS. I did consider the 172 but the fuel and insurance bills were enough to put me off.

Yepp as I say i have owned one and it was in the garage more time than it was out. It is a good car but thery need to take a little more care building it, that's why I didn't go for the Clio 182.

Fair enough, I've never had the 'pleasure' of owning a French car so wouldn

  • 10 months later...

I have changed from Mk2 172 to a fabia VRS, as the ride quality of the Clio was Cr*p, and only made sense when really going mad!! PLUS Reg Vardy Renault where the worst dealer i have ever used, they managed to lie to me 5 times in an hour
