I posted this message on the new user page of the Briskoda website but didn't get any replies, can anyone help?

First off I'd like to say hello to every one, this is the first thing I've written on Briskoda.

I am the owner of an 02 reg Octavia Vrs, and have had the car for about two months. In that time the Engine management light has come on 6 times!

This first two times I took the car to my local Skoda dealer as i was near by so thought it best to get things check asap. They told me there was nothing wrong with the car and that it was probably just a one off (twice)!!!!!

The third time I took it back to garage where I purchased the car, and in fairness to the gargae they have been very good about things. They dissmantled the exhaust re-sealed and re-built it and the car ran fine for a couple of days and then the light came back on again.

The fourth time I took it back again and the mass aire flow sensor was changed.

The fith time i took the car back they sent the car back to the main dealers who changed the oxygen sensor??

I picked the car up yesterday evening and this morning the warning light has come again.

Has any one heard of a problem like this before, and does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? I would really appreciate any advice, other than these problems the car is fantastic, not quite as quick as I'd hoped but still fast enough. The general build quality seam excellent and the space is very impressive.

Hi Mate

Sounds like you have had a few problems

I think the main problem could have been with the MAF

The MAF can take its time to fail completely

It can read like a Lambda problem , but in reality it could have been down to a failing MAF at the time

VAGCOM could have been used and loggings could have been done to read the air readings and then it could have been diagnosed then

I think you could do with a full diagnostic check done on it to find out what the problem is

Is there someone near you with VAGCOM and also check all the pipes on there too

If you have a problem with the engine , it could be why you are not getting full power

Hello mate, I have the same car, and same problem!

My engine management light comes come, I take it back to the garage where I brought it (not a skoda dealer) they read the fault codes, cancel them and advise me to take it to a skoda garage - although they cannot see any fault with the car.

The car drives as normal, no loss of power, nothing funky happening with fuel consumption.

I'm booked in to a skoda dealer for the 1st feb to see what they can tell me

You guys should invest in VAG-COM. If you are running cars with no dealer support and want to know what's going on it will save you a fortune in wasted time and randomly replaced parts.

You will also not have to rely wholly on what you thrid party garages are or aren't telling you.

I've been looking at VAG COM as I have heard it mentioned on here, and although i'm trying my best, I cant yet get my head around what exactly it is that I need, and what exactly that it does.

My current understanding:

1. I buy a wire that connects my car to a PC/laptop

2. I download VAG COM software to said PC

I connect it all up and hey presto, i'm reading fault codes....... however

I only have a PC, no laptop. Does this mean I will have to run a very long wire from the car to the computer, and then keep on running up and down the stairs between the 2 machines??? if so, is such a wire available?

I can sympathise that you may not have the laptop, and yes it is possible to use VAG-COM with a desktop subject to the limitations of the cabling.

However I see from your profile your car is modded so you might wish to look upon it as an investement. Paying upwards of £60 per hour for main dealer diagnostic checks and it will soon pay for itself.

You don't need to run between both machines as such. Plug in, turn the ignition on and start the scan from the PC.

Thank you VRStu. Think i'm gonna have to invest.

As for the whole "modded car" thing, i'm not too sure about that at the moment. I only picked up my baby 3 weeks ago, the garage told me it was "chipped" but having never driven an apparently standard one I cant tell.

I'm going to see jabba tomorrow morning to see if they can confirm anything for me.

It is expensive if you buy the genuine stuff but IMHO it really is worth it.

You'll know what is going on with your and diagnose faults yourself.
