The next Fabia vRS - will it be as good?

Featured Replies

Ok, been thinking about this a bit, mainly cos after 3 years and when mine is paid off I'll need something to replace it that will tick all the same boxes.

Will the next one provide all the same levels of value for money with useable performance and practicality, or will Skoda bend to peer pressure and start shoving big turbo'd petrol engines in there and making it a 3 door etc?

I'm quite proud of Skoda for sticking to their guns with the original vRS being a diesel with no petrol option. It's almost a purists thing....untainted. :D

The equivalent Seat is a 3 door, more expensive to buy and insure and also comes with a petrol variant which means they were scared of cornering themselves in the market with just making one engine type.

The reasons for me buying a vRS were more than reasonable levels of usable grunt, 5 doors, diesel economy, well kitted, good insurance, decent looks and a good price. I've got my doubts that the next one will satisfy all those criteria without sacrificing something.

They'll end up putting in a 2.0T FSi or something daft just to compete with all the competition thus ruining the mpg and the insurance grouping. Either that or they'll make it a 3 door and ruin the practicality. Perhaps they'll up the price too now that they're all 'upmarket' and that, perhaps to about

I'd put 50p and a chunky kitkat on it being 5-door only, and 1.4TSI 140. And just under 14k basic.

Interesting. A 1.4TSI 140 and perhaps a 2.0 TDi 140 alongside it perhaps?

They have to recognise that it's success is more than partly down to it being a diesel?

It will be interesting to see what eventually happens. Must admit I would like a derv again unless the fuel economy in real life for MY kind of driving of a petrol is comparable. I somehow doubt it will be ;)

That occured to me, but the review I read suggested that even the 1.6 is too heavy for the new Fabia and the ride and handling suffer, so with a 2.0TDI it'd be a disaster, I'd think. The 1.9 130 again would perhaps be more sensible.

You'd think so!

Dunno if they will continue to use the PD130 - emissions and all that :(

Ah - yes, I think I'd heard that mentioned. Ho-hum.

The logical choice would be the 2ltr TDI.

Audi A3-spec 2.0 TFSI ;)

and 4Motion ;)

I'd be willing to bet that a 3dr varient won't appear. I think VAG are worried about stealing too many sales from Ibiza and Polo.

It's anyone's guess though, we'll just have to wait and see! Twincharger and 2.0TDi aren't that hard to imagine though.

Now that it's been said I can see the 1.4 TSI being used quite easily.

Does the 2.0 TDi weight that much more than the 1.9?

Sadly if that happened I wouldn't buy another one. Economical or not it wont be a match for a TDi both in terms of MPG and torque.

Shame really. All it would take is Ford to release a Fiesta ST-TDCi around the same time and VAG would have a fight on their hands if the TDi is not to be re-used in the Fabia, Polo or Ibiza.

Having said that they seriously need to start producing all alloy TDi engines to keep the weight down. The old cast iron blocks are well outdated now, if very reliable.

What about introducing a petrol engine like the 1.8T?

Would the 1.4 TSi be popular enough for buyers - fans of VAG cars know the pd130 engine and it's capabilities, so it depends how the TSi is marketed.

I'd be tempted by a 1.4TSI - my mileage is likely to reduce drastically soon. If it's available in the combi it'd be great - plenty of power (for me), decent economy. I do wish it had body coloured pillars though - I find them much more attractive.

I would be tempted by the 1.4 t fsi cant see the 2.0 t fsi making it. 2.0 TDI possibly both pushing out 140 bhp.

However I hope they make one with DSG.

17" alloys as standard would be nice and lowered suspension (even lower than the standard vrs now would be more than welcome)

I'll raise your Kitkat with a Dime bar, and say it will be a 5 door and diesel only.

Interesting. I do think there'll be a diesel VRS, but I would be surprised if there isn't a TSI.

I expect the stutter will still be phenominal

If offered with the same combination of equipment and price then yes it will be a tempting offering. But, they will have to find a better way of building it than the current method of a drunken one armed blind man with a spanner.

I'd be very surprised if it's not a diesel again.

LOL. You pessimist..... :D

According to the Autocar article I've just read the vRS will be a diesel with a similar power output to the current one. That screams 2.0 140bhp TDi to me. ;)

The TSI would be an interesting concept though, although it depends on Skodas marketing ideals as to whether they do it or not. They either play it safe and fit it (thus appealing to a wider audience but in the process have to make people choose) or dare to be different again and don't.

Tend to agree, with the current VAG band positioning and emissions requirements seems like 2.0 TDI (140) would be the only real option. Bit more BHP would be nice but only other diesel unit is the 170bhp which would potentially cannibalise golf/leon/octavia sales.

1.4 TSI might be an option, doesn't appeal to me, my mate drove a Golf GT 1.4TSI (170) one said it was awful think Clarkson also said it was a bad engine and didn't feel like 170bhp, apparently 2.0 T FSI was much better

Seems like the sweet spot for a small hot hatch is now around 200bhp (Corsa VXR, Clio etc.) Think us Fabia drivers will have to be content with a "warm" hatch due to the VAG positioning strategy but you never know!

I am in the same situation, now the car is 3, looking at possible replacement.

The only real current option at the moment is the Grande Punto 130.

We have memeber on the site Czech, based and has money on the 170bhp 1.4TSi, & based on a previous prediction by them, my money is on that.

I have test driven the Golf GT, with this engine, and think that the furby would more than suit it, the golf is too heavy for it, AND I canot get my head around paying 17K for a 1.4
