Question about "CAN GATEWAY"

Featured Replies

HI! Recently I bought chinese VAG-COM cable VERSION 607.3 from Ebay and when I connect it to my car which is SKODA FABIA 2004 the program says that "CAN is not ready" although when I scan the car I get message that I have "CAN GATEWAY" controller! So, is it a problem with the "cheap" cable or is it something else?! Thanx to all the users here for the information they're sharing!

Real VAG-COM interfaces are not made in China. Whatever you have there isn't legit, so don't be surprised if it doesn't work as advertised.

Furthermore, I wouldn't expect much help from anyone who has spent their hard-earned money on a legit one.

I agree with Uwe.

What I would ask is does the Fabia use CAN to communicate?

You need to do some more reading mate.

Thanx for the answers guys:) UWE, I'd like to defend myself a little bit.......I'm from Bulgaria - don't know if you've heard about this little country, we recently joined the EU - and let me put it this way, I can't spend the money for the original cable even if I want to......I'm not complaining, but this is the situation here:).....Thanx again!!!

I do not accept your defense.

If you own a car new and expensive enough to require a that kind of interface (which a 2004 Fabia does not), or you make your living fixing cars new enough to require it, then you can afford the real thing.

devil's advocate here.... but surely, the guy has bought this lead, and is asking for help from a users forum. he hasn't gone to Ross Tech and complained, has he?

cut him some slack, and maybe help him a little?

anyway, some ideas: try version 403 (I think) of VAG-COM, otherwise, try one of the many other applications that are available

Thanx!:) Can you suggest another app that can "go" with this hardware?!

The issue that Uwe rasies is that if judasfan is using an interface that is capable of running that version of software then it is probably counterfeit.

I also fell into the trap of a cheaper interface from China a while ago and promptly realised that if you want the real thing with the proper support then you have to pay the money to the people who develop it.

Very true, Stu.

But even on the Ross-Tech site, it says that the older version will work with non-genuine (for want of a better word) interface leads.

I take it that there is a patent that Ross-Tech holds for the lead?

I would imagine that yes there is a patent involved somewhere but after v403 or there abouts the software requires activation via the cable. Hence to have a cable running with a later version of the software must mean it contains counterfeit registration information.

Version 409 is the last one that works with "dumb" interfaces, i.e. interfaces which are just "electronics" and can legally be reproduced.

As of version 5xx, VAG-COM works only with intelligent interfaces, i.e. interfaces that have a microcontroller in them which runs firmware (software) that provides part of the functionality for VAG-COM. Specifically it handles some of the most timing-critical functions which are difficult to do precisely on PC running Windows (or any other modern operating system for that matter). Due to cryptographic authentication, we can be quite certain that these supposedly "Compatible" interfaces have an exact copy of our firmware and digital signatures in them, which is blatantly stealing our work and is obviously illegal.

TRUE! But as i said before the main reason not to buy form you was THE PRICE.....I'm not complaining, I just needed the cable promptly cause the warranty of my car was ending soon and I had some problems with the authorised dealer! Sorry!!!

But as i said before the main reason not to buy form you was THE PRICE

So if you don't like the price of a car, it's OK to buy a stolen one for less...?

OF COURSE NO:).........I realised that the cable wasn't original after I bought it!!! How should I know that something was wrong, it was advertised freely on the net, I've compared th prices and decide to buy it form there!!!
