What's wrong with the Jetta?

Featured Replies

I am not in the market for a new car at all, but I have oft found my thoughts tending Jetta-wards. It's a nice looking thing, I think, seems very sensibly priced, it's a very nice size and has the engines that I would be thinking of if I were looking for something new - the 2.0TDI and 2.0TFSI.

But I hardly ever see them. Is there something wrong with the Jetta, or is it just that smallish saloons aren't very popular here?

A couple of people at work have them. I like them.

nothing wrong with it as its just a golf mk V with a boot..... maybe it should ov been called a golf saloon

Thing is, I quite liked the Bora. I thought it was better looking than that generation Golf.

I'm sure I heard tell of a soon-to-be-out Jetta Estate, which would be an intruiging alternative to an Octavia.

i really like the new jetta.... bit out of my price range tho

There's nothing wrong with the Jetta. You don't see them because in the UK saloon cars became unpopular after the introduction of the hatchback. That's why even though a Jetta costs more than a Golf, it retains less value.

They are more popular in the US and the rest of Europe, mainly Spain, Germany and ROI.

Personally I always found the Jetta/Vento/Bora/Jetta (again) more pleasent than the Golf.

But the 2.0TFSI is cheaper as a Jetta than as a Golf GTI - I assume you get less "stuff".

The Jetta is more popular in the US as mentioned. Far more Passats are sold here.

The Jetta is an Octavia at the end of the day.

Just like the Bora/Vento/Jetta that preceeded it, it will make a great second hand buy in a few years but will lose loads in depreciation from new.

Has a classy look about it for sure.

No , it's on a longer wheelbase than the golf - exactly the same as the Octavia in fact.

The reason you don't see many is that the passat isn't much more expensive for a bigger car , and smaller saloon cars have never sold well here.

Also if you compare the spec in detail , a lot of the stuff that's an option on the Jetta is standard on the Octavia. You get a car with more toys , a more useful hatchback and it's cheaper.

Jetta is a saloon, Octavia is a hatch.

I just don't think that hatchbacks that are "converted" to saloons work to be honest, the best looking saloons are those that are designed to be just that saloons...

Having said that I do quite like the look of the Jetta, but if I wanted a VW saloon I'd go for the Passat

i like the Jetta, VW's best looking car imo :)

Hmm. So better as a second hand purchase than a new one.

Though I would say that the Phaeton is the best looking VW. A very silly car in many respects, but it looks ace.

i shall concede to your point sporky, the pheaton does indeed look rather spiffing.

I had a Golf 2 GTI 5 door, replaced by a Jetta 2 GTI 16v. Apert from the obvious performance gain, I found the Jetta a better car in nearly every way. :):)

I find it rather elegant - and it somehow doesn't look as big as it is. If that makes sense. Maybe I should save up for a secondhand 3.0TDi - the depreciation is insane, so there might be a "bargain" out there...

3.0TDi?? are you had, they make a way more biggerer engine than that!!

W12 is what you want sunny jim!

Heres our one at work:

How much do you want for the sofa throws in the top pic? Or are they an optional extra on the phaeton? Luverly.

looking at the spec of them they seem quite heavy, with the 6.0 W12 4motion one weighing 2468Kg

still does a 5.9 0-60
