FMIC Bumper Mods

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am going to purchase a FMIC and would like peoples advice/pics on getting the bumper modified so the intercooler can have maximum air flow and for cosmetic reasons.

I have seen a couple of pics where the bumper has been cut so the intercooler is on show.

Is getting the bumper modified an expensive and tricky option?

Also if the bumper is modified how is the intercooler protected..do you have to buy some mesh and make a DIY job of protecting it.

Cheers:)

Yes, mesh needed. Can chop out where the numberplate sits and tidy it up with mesh, and move the plate to the left or right. :)

I did this with my fabia bumper, in a similar style. End result is quite good. I no longer have the V badge on the grille and the plate is now on the bumper.

It all depends which FMIC you are going to buy, as to how much, if any, of the bumper you have to cut out.

With some FMIC's you dont need to cut anything, as they sit behind the lower centre grill.

I have the ABD Racing one, and no cutting is required.

No cutting required for the Jabbasport one either.

If it the Forge Large Intercooler they supply bumper bar moddified with it

but if cooler not that big it shouln't need any mods

Thanks for everyones replies.

I realise you can have an FMIC without modifying the front bumber but I would like to modify it so the intercooler is more on show.:D

Anyone got any pics of modified front bumpers for an octy.

Cheers

Don't forget, to much chamber to fill can lead to, to much lag bruv!

Unless your running a bfo turbo :rubchin:

In response to your PM, see these threads for a couple of pics with bumper off and FMIC in and bumper on without FMIC.

Cutting the metal work is relatively straight forward and I acheived it with a decent hacksaw and power drill to take out the weld spots. If you do this, I would recommend you invest in a upper and lower strut brace to put the strength back into the front end that you have removed with the cut bumper iron. As for crash protection - unproven.

With regards to actual bumper shell modification - just cut of the recess where the reg plate usually sits - plastic is easy to cut through with a sharp stanley blade. Then the grill was fabricated from some good old Halfords ripspeed stainless steel mesh and cunning fixed to the inside of the bumper (don't have any pics of this I'm affraid).

Dude, it is easy enough to cut out the front grill as it is reassessed to begin with.

A lot of people have cut the crash beam out completely (in front of the FMIC), but I didn't agree with that as it would leave the front end without any front end strength. In order for me to get 100% of the air flow to the i/c with some strength retained in the crash beam I simply cut the front of the channel section out, leaving the top and bottom piece of the beam intact (see pics below).

It doesn

Hmm that looks good enough to me :)

Cheers, the biggest problem was sorting the wire mesh for the grill, it was a real pain in the ar$e!!!

The results (cosmetic and performnce) were very good, if I had left the bumper standard only 40-50% would have been exposed, this way I can get the absolute best from it by being fully exposed!:D :D
