A pleasant surprise - MPG

Featured Replies

Recently changed from Superb 2.0TDi to an Octavia VRs Petrol.

Completed my first tank and got 360 miles out of it with no sign of the warning light coming on (not quite in the red). As a rough guide I have averaged 35mpg for this tank using Tesco 99RON.

To be honest this is better than I expected :)

PS Car is not new and has circa 10k on the clock.

Your obviously not driving it right then :P

PS keep an eye on your oil, I've found, and so have one or two others that the TFSI lump uses quite a bit of it :o

I've seen 36 on a trip to Cambridge...all at 60 in 6th.

But to average 35 over a full tank you must have a very light right foot.

Just think, if you had a mk1 vRS, you would of got around 40mpg.

My mk2 vRS averages 31mpg and 1 litre of oil per 5000 miles.

In my MK1 I struggle to get 300 miles to a tank :)

Yes and I managed 12mpg out of my mk1 once as well. Must stay away from Bedford Autodrome.

If you drive a mk1 like a saint and it is standard, 40mpg is easily obtainable. Not so in the mk2.

And if you are going to drive your VRS like that you may as well save your money and buy a 1.6fsi instead

Had my vRS a week, 3 tanks of 97 one of Tesco 99, covered 1200 miles nearly all long runs with a fair share of press on driving and I averaged 28.9 mpg. Back along the M4 from Swindon to Slough late this afternoon, really busy so sat back , cruised it at 70 ish and it averaged 41 mpg over 55 miles - not that intend to do too much of that, can't be good for the engine ;)

I have been driving the car normally, pressing on at times, relaxed driving at others. Not particularly looking to get high fuel economy (wouldn't have changed back to a petrol if I was) but its a bonus.

On previous cars (Subaru, Audi TDi) I have nearly always averaged the combined mpg quoted.

If you drive a mk1 like a saint and it is standard, 40mpg is easily obtainable. Not so in the mk2.

I agree, I commute from Barnet to St Neots every day, in both my mk1's I could get 42mpg max. In the mk2 the best I got so far is 35mpg.

Yesterday, the fuel light came on just as I left St Neots, By the time I reached Barnet (45 miles) it said I had 0 miles left, I filled it up and only could get 50 litres in it. Doesn't it have a 60 litre tank? Is this just to ensure idiots like me don't run out? :)

Just out of interest what MPG is other MK2 VRS TDI drivers getting?

My mate works for skoda n got me the car and he gets 37.2 out of his TDI i've had mine BHP + by 10 and i'm getting 38.7 mpg.

I thought this wasn't great cos we both drive the cars how they should be driven! they are the what car hot hatch of the year after all!!!

I have a new VRS 2.0 (170bhp) & averaging 42mpg. This is combined driving, between the commute into work, 50/50 sitting in traffic & then on motorway. Then at weekends giving it a little push down country roads.

On my Vrs Tdi i've been taking it steady on the journey to work driving between 65 & 70mph for the 53 miles journey mainly on the A50/M1 and i've been getting between 49 and 52mpg. I got 570 miles from 50 litres the other week.

The lowest figure I say on my Mk1 vRS was 9MPG. The highest was close to 40. I would expect the MK2 to be fairly simillar if driven the same way, my 2.0TDI octy manages 55MPG on the daily commute.

Our 1.9PD Octy II elegance does nearly 60mpg at 60mph, and over 600 miles to a full tank.......

That'll do for me!

  • 5 months later...

First week in my Octy II vRS TFSI (running it in...) - 35mpg

Second week (still going steady but odd press of fun pedal)- 33mpg

Third week (must not redline, must not redline) - 31mpg

Fourth week (over 1200 miles, that'll do...) - Leave the display set to temperature

I love driving this car!

As I've mentioned in a couple of other threds its looking like I'm going to be in the market for a VRS sometime soon.

Initial thoughts due to the fact I'll be covering 15-20k of mainly motorway miles per year were towards the TDI, however after seeing TFSI's are better priced and in plentiful supply (looking for 12 months old 10k miles max), the TDI appears not to get any where near its potential mpg figures and the numerous problems and issues there appear to be with the 170bhp engine across the VAG range I'm wondering if a TFSI might be an option.

What mpg would you get from a TFSI on a good 200 mile plus journey and cruise control was set to 70? Would the 40's be achievable?

I suppose basically what I'm asking is there no major financial difference between either taking into account I could save 2k on buying a TFSI in the first place?

I've been driving a Golf GT TDi 140 for a couple of weeks, lovely car to drive but I have to say I am unimpressed with it's economy.

On Sunday we did Hampshire to Brimingham to Leicester and back to Hants driving moderately and only returned 41mpg. My old 260hp TFSi would have been almost the same as that.

Hmmm, so with Diesel prices being a good few pence per litre higher than petrol at present your trip would have been cheaper to make in your TFSI?

MPG? Seems to have dominated my thoughts since I picked up my petrol Vrs two weeks ago. I've seen everything from 5mpg showing to 35mpg but no higher. We did a 250 round trip up north last weekend & averaged 33mpg (25mpg round town seems the norm)which I thought was decent, that was with some 'spirited' driving & some cruising along. Aren't the tanks in these things 55litre? So I'd be looking at around 300miles per tank (25mpg)

Like the Sellyselkirk method...I think I might need to adopt that one soon !

Do you guys think the higher Ron fuels make any difference... I am not too worried about the performance gain, as I feel I have more than enough for now but if it gives me better mpg I'd consider it.

34.7mpg for me on long term average

Can get 35-37 quite regularly on the 35ml run from work to home (mostly 70 dual but some congestion)

If I take the alternative route home 60mph single carriageway I can normally get 38-40mpg but have seen 43mpg.

More urgent driving sees 33mpg and a run to Glasgow airport (200ml round trip at about 75mph) 4 up with luggage got 31mpg.

This is on super normally Shell V power. But I'm on boggo 95RON for now coz Tesco was out of 99 as bleedin usual.

I'd guess I maybe get a bit more mpg from super. I thinks it's more down to the car being smoother than more bang per penny.

I've not had 95 in for a long time so I'll see if a tank of Tesco's makes a difference.

I've used about 1l of oil in the first 5000 miles.

The TFSI engine seems to drink when its cold, my trip to work is 6 miles and driving like a saint I get 30mpg sat in rolling traffic (20mph) for 2 miles and rolling at between 30&50 for the rest. Whilst on the motorway for a longer trip ive seen as much as 42 mpg on a 40 mile run and with a fairly heavy foot on a 60 mile motorway trip I got 33 mpg (quite a bit of hard acceleration and a constantly variable speed).

In 2500 miles it hasnt used a drop of oil either.
