Busy Bodies in our village = someone dead!

Featured Replies

Hi guys, need somewhere to vent my rage at what ive always said in our village...

i live in a sleepy village and sometime back the local busybodies who are mostly retired got together to ask the council to but chicane's in the village with big ride over speed bumps for no other reason other than they felt there was "too much traffic"...(isnt it the use of roads what car tax is paid for?!?) in the village! in the 16 years ive lived there NOT ONE person in the village has been hurt by traffic, apart from the occaisional football getting run over, lol!

in the 4 years since they have put the 10 chicanes and bumps in which turn the road into a 1 lane street in sections there have been at least 10 major accidents, and 2 serious ones where a biker was knocked off of his bike by someone trying to squeeze through and another last weekend where someone was killed(no idea how, all we know is it was the chicane that resulted in the death of the car and driver)...in my mind this wouldnt of happened if the traffic calming measures were never introduced... WHEN DID THE NATION HAND OVER CONTROL TO A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!?! and look at the results!!!

sigh. thanks for letting me vent.:)

madness isn't it!!

i just dont understand why the council see fit to invest so much money into a project that is basically justified by less than 10 individuals who dont represent even the village's views.

it's probably more a political thing... lets face it, who are they going to vote for???

vote them out of power - get a petition and return the roads to their former state with speed cameras (or hire those swedish girls who hold up speed signs and little else!).

I reckon membership of the Daft Bats Party is growing by the minute. They've put chicanes on a steep hill near here. Very reasonable since cars pick up speed downhill and can reach the T-junction at the bottom going way too fast to stop. The daft thing is that they've signed it so that all the uphill traffic has to give way :ne_nau:

Perhaps, as suggested, you could rally folks to have yours changed? Would a petition distributed for signing in local shops help or something like that? How about flyposting a skull and crossbones on each chicane ;)

Probably a councillor lives very close - amazing what these guys can get done (for their own patch). We live right next door to an ex-Mayor and the 'pull' he has was amazing.

Plus, when I was taxxiing it was amazing to note the roads that were gritted, cleaned, tidied up - all, coincidentally, near a Councillor's abode.

There's speedbumps and chicanes all over the place up here , and where I live theres never been anyone knocked over by a car , and I've lived in the same house for 35 years!! Its also now a 20 MPH zone (that everyone ignores , thank god). I'm sure all the squeaks and clonks from my Fabia are caused by going over these bumps every day (I have to go over 16 in just over a mile , thats 32 per trip out and back from my house!).

Are they no warning signs for the chicane or change of priorities(its illegal not to)........I fail to see why people always blame the road for any accident...I've never known a road to be guilty only stupid drivers (I include myself in the stupid bit by the way.. )

Sorry but thats total bo**ocks.

I'm a cab driver, my grandfather was a councillor, my grandmother is a local and county councillor and she was also the mayor for many years.

Her road doesn't get treated any differently to any others, it's still got pot holes and doesn't get treated with grit until the bus routes have been done first.

Most councillors make very little money from what they do, which is why most of them tend to be older, as they have made there money, retired, and want something to do to stave off the boredom. you dont get rich by working as a local councillor, you get rich first then spend everyones inheritance trying to help out ungrateful w*nkers!

Hi Duke,

I think you make some great points there about those Chicanes. I hate them as well.

I gather that the B3110 at Norton St. Philip, near Frome, is pretty dangerous. They have Chicanes on one side of the village and there have been numerous accidents there as well although, AFAIK, no-one has died there. But when I drive back from visiting relatives who live a bit off the A350 @ Hindon I have found the B3110 closed on quite a few occasions.

seems like im not the only one, forgot to mention its supposed to be a speed limit of 20 too, lol. glad to see im not the only one getting mad over where my taxes go! im all for speed camera's or even the ones that take an average speed through the village but it seems madness to point traffic at each other through chicanes, i think ill go on a witch hunt in the pub... funny story, one of the busy bodies had a go at my dad the other day in there because she thought i was going too fast past her house (in a octy vrs?! between huge bumps?! f##k off love!) and to top that her husband has a tvr and he canes it through the village every weekend, GRRRR! now i just make sure the dv unloads every time i go past to let her know its me. hee hee!

if the facts are correct where there had been no serios injuries / accidents/deaths, before the changes , then surely the council should be petitioned that they have actually made the road MORE dangerous by doing this.

I would be inclined to got the council road safety, and the local rag to highlight this.

The point about traffic coming downhill has priority, i was always under the impression that up hill traffic should have right of way. someone will correct me I am sure.

:)

Nope i remember uphill traffic having right of way too when i took my test

local councillor near where I used to live campained for a 50mph limit and speed cameras on the stretch of the A1 near his village (between five lane ends roundabout, A57 to Worksop, and Lincoln) and he has been caught by them and successfully prosecuted TWICE! lol..... why would he want to enforce a 50 zone, then consistantly break the speed limit?! ah yes.... votes.......

It does actually make the stretch of road safer (as there are t-junctions turning to and from the village) but I had to laugh when I read of his convictions in the local paper ;)

Definitely remove all the stupid obstacle-course furniture from our roads.

And put cameras in instead

There'd be nothing to make you swerve, brake to 5mph and accelerate away, knacker your suspension, or second guess other cars driven by idiots.

Theres too many bl**dy road signs too, our roads look ridiculous these days what with all the signage everywhere!!

We've got a lamp-post Near us with two 30 MPH signs on it (one big one and one small one) they are both pointing the same way?

if a road has a 30mph limit then doesn't it have to be fit for purpose?

I.E. driving along at 30mph, so when i broke my sump by going over a decievingly large speed bump at 25mph i should have been able to claim against the council?
