Help, my alarm keeps going off

Featured Replies

Hello, I am trying to save myself a trip to the garage. The alarm on my X-reg skoda fabia keeps going off at odd times day and night, every few days or so. It last sfor about 5-10 seconds (no lights flashing, not sure if they are supposed to) and there is no obvious cause (no people near car, no storms). It seems as if it might be 'over-sensitive' in some way and I am tempted to just disable it before by neighbours start to complain. Can I do this myself? It seems to cost a lot to have the problem diagnosed and my local dealership are refusing to give me any idea about what it might cost to fix.

One of our key fobs needs its battery changing, could this be sending a distress message to the car?!

Thanks for any ideas you might have...

I had an old Fiesta years ago with an aftermarket alarm. When the battery on the car started to die, the alarm would persistently go off. Don't know if that would be the same cause on a factory fitted alarm or not, but perhaps see if your battery needs charging?

Is there somewhere to change the sensitivity near the volume sensor (or is that a different car i'm thinking of)

I had this problem on my W reg fabia. According to the garage, it was the interior sensor. They reduced the sensitivity. At one point, they changed the entire part for a new one. The car still, on the odd occassion, sounds the alarm. The lights do not flash. Not enough to take it back to the garage. I think the sensor is located in the interior light cluster in the roof. I notice it most in the evening...probably air volume related - temp changes or something.

Funnily, someone at work has a W reg fabia, and when I press my keyfob to lock or unlock my vrs, their alarm sounds, and no lights flash.

I put down to electrical problems in the early models.

Disconnect the sensor.

It seems as if it might be 'over-sensitive' in some way and I am tempted to just disable it before by neighbours start to complain. Can I do this myself?
Find somebody with Vag-Com. I'm sure the sensitivity can be adjusted.

Is the bonnet shut properly?

Could also be a faulty bonnet switch - it's known (IMHO from experience!) to be prone to cracking and getting moisture in it.

Try disconnecting it (it's near the 'bonnet catch' at the front of the engine bay) and seeing if the alarm stops going off.

A faulty bonnet switch will also affect the action of the windscreen wipers.

Mine also does this occasionally , usually in a supermarket car park (near a petrol station) , I'm wondering if it is stray microwaves or radio waves or something like that , personally I just let it get on with it now , usually cannot be bothered to walk back to the car and reset it!
