Help me choose my Octavia please!

Featured Replies

The sports suspension does "jiggle" alot over less compliant road surfaces.

It gets tiresome when you spend a minimum of 5 hours a day in the pilot's seat.

However, it's good fun when you can throw it at a corner and leave alot of other cars standing.

I think I will do without it on the next Octavia.:(

I found the same very quickly on a test drive; you get even more 'jiggle' than my Fabia on Koni Sport shocks which are notably firm.

However, there is a solution available to you NOW; Fit Koni FSD shock absorbers! These are specifically designed to give a comfortable ride but be firm when required for good handling. :D:thumbup:

There is a Group Buy at present for these at a very competetive price with JKM in Portsmouth, which I have joined, as even though I have not got my vRS yet I know it will be a worthwhile purchase/investment.

The vRS TDi is very good. Performance is well up on my Superb (130PD), but it still lacks the top end punch of the petrol vRS. 0-60 time is hit badly by the need to change into 3rd. Sometimes, I wonder if the 6 speed gearbox is really needed. Five well spaced ratios would probably serve the TDi better, as you'd be able to hit 60 in 2nd (like I can with my Superb).

If it were me, this would be the priority I would put on the options:

1) Maxi-dot display.

2) Dual zone climate, jumbo box, rear electric windows.

3) Auto dimming mirror, rain sensor, light assistant.

4) Rear parking sensors.

5) Cruise control.

6) Sunset glass.

7) Curtain airbags/active headrests.

8) Xenon headlights.

9) Heated front seats.

10) Variable boot floor.

11) 18" alloys.

Bagpuss.

For what it is worth my option priority, and reasoning, was as follows:-

1) 18" alloys - Handling/roadholding, looks, resale value (chose the 'dealer fit' B14s, they're super cool.)

2) Xenon headlights - I commute 4-5 months of the year in the dark and want to see where I'm going.

3) Dual zone/Jumbo/rear elec windows - comfort/convenience, resale value

4) Heated seats - great on a cold morning and actually use them, on low, for most of the year (keeps your back warm).

5) Rear parking sensor - convenience.

6) Cruise - set and forget on the M-way, Licence protector!

7) maxidot - clearer to read, looks cool.

All as ordered on my vRS. Anything else is IMHO unnecessary, particluarly SatNav - learn to read a map and preplan a route!

Oh, nearly forgot; Metallic paint, not for me. Saved

No can do i'm afraid, 'tis a company car and the fleet company will be less than pleased if I change the shockers.

The next one will be minus sports suspension methinks, it the standard setup much softer than the sports setup and by what degree is the cornering ability reduced?

Wow, thanks for all the advice guys, it's all been very useful.

I'd like to make it clear that I know that DSG isn't able to change the ratios, it was just some of the rubbish that the Skoda sales monkey was spouting during the test drive. I know that DSG is very clever but I don't think that it's able to take itself apart and stick different cogs in!

Anyway, this is the spec that I'm going to submit for approval by the big boss man. Unfortunately I'm really not sure if it will get approved or not as the finance controller witch who sorts these things doesn't seem to understand her own pointlessly complicated co. car policy. So fingers crossed!

VRS Estate, Corrida Red

-F+R parking sensors (option required by the company, they obviously have faith in our parking skills!).

-Maxi-dot (how could I refuse?)

-The dimming mirror/ rain sensor thing (just making the most of what I interpret the budget to be.)

-18" wheels (bling!)

-Sunset glass (for when I'm dealing/ pimping etc)

If I can ask one more question, it's is the rain sensor any good? It's really useful on my Pug, but I read elsewhere on here that's crap.

Wish me luck!

I have had no serious problems with it in 35000 miles and 6 months motoring.

The dimming mirror is the better gadget of the 2 IMO.

Leave the wipers off completely unless it's raining then stick them on auto, seems to work for me.

Good luck with the witch in the finance department, she'll have you driving a base model Roomster if you aren't careful.

Don't joke! :(

I'm not  , I had to fight tooth and nail with the powers that be to get my Octavia.

There was talk of a Mondeo estate (OK I suppose)

A Citroen C5 estate (pmsl)

Even a Toyota Prius due to tax reasons

Dig your heels in and get the car that you want mate

Company cars can often be a blessing and then a bind.

However, couldn't you try and persuade your fleet manager/company that it will be a benefit to you not getting a 'bad back' and/or being more comfortable on long journeys and so less fatigued and able to do your job better etc etc and that you will pay for them yourself. Not too difficult if your Company owns their cars but perhaps tricky if they are Leased/Contract Hire.

Worth a shot?

Soryy but IMHO don't get the rain sensor. I had one on a previous car and it annoyed the hell out of me putting the wipers 'on' when I didn't want them. Mainly 'cos I always put RainX or similar on my windscreen to provide a clearer screen when it rains, the water beads up and the airflow whips it up the screen much quicker, to the extent that you only need 'intermittant' wipers on the M-way - the rain sensor will dictate that the wipers should be 'on'.

If you can, go for the climate/jumbo/rear elec windows; I know this costs more than the rain sensor but there will be a big benenfit at resale time plus it makes life more comfortable for you.

I guess that auto wipers are a marmite option, my experience on my current car has been good so I'm tempted to get them again. On the pug they only really struggle to detect fine road spray, any other time they do a good job and save me fiddling with the wiper speed all the time.

With the way the co. car budget policy works (or at least my interpretion) I had to choose between 18"wheels, xenons or jumbo box. The xenons seem pricey for dipped beam only. I decided against the jumbo box option as it's alot to pay for leccy windows in the back, which is the only bit that interests me and even then I won't really miss them as I usually sit in the front when driving :P . I don't need dual zone climate and don't care about having a box box between the seats. Resale is not an issue either as it's a co. car. Or maybe I'm just a tart who can't resist big wheels!

Of the 18s, xenons, climate/jumbo - yes; I'd go for them in that order. The 18s will make the car handle sharper and the look better. I agree with argument on the climate/jumbo and almost made the same decision until I remembered that my wife needs the left armrest.

Yes, xenons are pricey for dip beam only BUT how much night driving do you do, and how much of that uses main beam (when the dip beam is still on anyway). I commute 5 months a year in the dark but rarely get to use main beam - so xenons were a MUST for me.

How about getting Corrida Red or Sprint yellow (i.e. not spending £300 on metallic paint) and getting the xenons?

I tatally aggree there about the xenons if your commuting and need that brighter light. Heres my oppinion from driving my dads car. With the xenon you get the washers as well and this totally bugs my dad when I use his car and it comes back with an empty washer bottle and the bonnet is cover in streaks from the washers. This wont worry the comuter but if your a spit and pollish person who loves keeping there car shiny then these headlight washers will bug the hell out of you.:)

I'm a 'spit & polish' man as well and my car gets washed every two weeks or so, particularly in the winter; BUT that's why I have chosen the Coridda Red as it 'hides' the dirt best and why I would never buy a black car!!

Ever thought the headlamp wash is designed to do a job - keep your headlamps washed!! I don't mind filling the washer bottle once a week - I'd rather do that than have dirty lights :D

I'm already planning to go for Corrida Red! The only way to get 18s and xenons would be to forfeit maix-dot, sunset glass and rain sensors. My old Evo had xenons and they were nice, but 90% of my co. car driving is in daylight so I think I can survive without.

OK; fair choice; good reasoned decision; GO FOR IT

Neither do I but the old man always moans:)

Off beat question; Do you NEED or HAVE TO have the Estate? The boot of the hatch is just a big, its just I guess the Estate is a little bit more flexible with large items.

If you took the hatch you'd have £850 to get more options. Perhaps?

Hi Ive had several cars with autowipers now pug 406, pug 407, renault laguna, renault senic, vw bora and a vw passat they all work ok passat being best but i find that your wipers need to be tip top condition all the time other wise there are very annoying. My next car wont have them I'm due my Octavia in March I had to fight so hard just to get an Ambient with 2.0tdi no options what so ever (new company dont have a driver's outlook on cars). Auto dip rear mirror is nice though.

:iagree:

If the wiper blades are worn they smear and that really upsets the rain sensor, I know this because my aeros are worn out and smear like they are made from plastic.

I also found that areo blades + rain repellant = mega juddery wipers. I had to deep clean the windscreen with glass cutter to get the damn stuff off, good on the side windows though.

Well, I got a final quote from the leasing company for the VRS with my option choices. Today I spoke to the finance witch. Finance witch has to get the quote approved by the head honcho, but finance witch is in no hurry to get this done and so it will be a over a week before I find out if I'm getting a nice red VRS on big wheels or if I have to go back to the drawing board :thumbdwn:

It won't be the end of the world if it's not approved, but having spent time thinking about the spec I'm actually quite excited about it now so I don't really want to have to wait so long to find out. Grrrr....
