How do the police get rid of their old cars?

Featured Replies

Does each force have occasional auctions or something? Or do they go direct to one of the main auction houses?

I'm just interested to have a nosey really, see what certain models go for, and how much of an actual good deal they - especially considering the usual high miles, high stresses, holes in the dash, etc etc.

Cheers,

Steve

I'd also be interested in these Steve so if you find any local(ish), can you let me know.

All I've found in the past is those dodgy sites that will tell me where the auctions are if I fork out

There's a few places that specialise in selling on ex-police cars, at least one of them is on ebay (or at least used to be).

Police cars are abused quite heavily . . . I would advise caution. They are serviced very regularly though (Cheshire's are 3000mls intervals for cars and 1000mls intervals for bikes). But I did ask this question to a police officer who I work with and he said "steer clear of them".

Cheers guys. Was just interested to see what's about. Not looking for one, just curiosity. A GMP traffic cop used to live in my road, so heard enough horror stories - mainly of RWD Capris and new engines in Range Rovers, from that era :)

Would always steer clear of the mundane stuff and pandas. But would quite like to see how an Octy vRS has shaped up, once its served its time as a pursuit/mway car.

Yup, my mate's dad (a Police inspector, and previous Traffic cop) says to steer clear, no matter how cheap.

They're driven worse than hire cars!

not that cheap

:iagree:

Thought they'd be really cheap.

I'd still like to try an old Police Volvo T5 though;)

There was a thread on this recentely with auction sites on, sorry I thought I may have kept one as a favourite but didn't. Try doing a search, it was only a couple of weeks ago or so. :)

If your looking for them in greater manchester I can find out.

a friend of mine works at a volvo dealership, and they do all the servicing on the police volvo's, he says they are maintained to a very high standard, engines/gearboxes replaced quite frequently etc... in fact that's how he got a spare t3 engine for his own car, it was perfect with only 70k on it too

The only example I can personally trace is one distinctive car that was Traffic Div out of Dumbarton, did 100_000 miles or so for the police, was bought for a few hundred by a local taxi driver, and did the same mileage again, before he sold it, still a solid runner, for a newer car.

Some police cars have had a hard life, while on the other hand they are serviced regularly. The seat bolters are usually worn down however seats are not expensive. On the traffic cars eg. omegs, vectras they have uprated brakes/suspension, heavy duty batteries, close ratio gearbox with limited slip diff ( :) ). The trim levels are usually basic.

As for holes in the dashboard, I havent seen this myself to be honest, it is usually neatly fitted.

Wardy you have PM.
