That wouldnt stop it from turning over though would it?

The engine did not turn over, no clicks, no dimming of dash lights, but it started perfectly every time since.

maybe the cold has knackered the battery? enough charge for the ignition to light up, but not enough to turn her over

It has started every time since. The only thing that has changed is the temperature. If the battery was knacked it wouldnt start now, and it did, and it has ever since.

Sounds to me as if the chip in the key was not recognized by the car, but is fine everytime after. This is not a fuel problem nor a flat battery, but could be as I already said, or it could be a bad connection on the battery.

You know thats what i thought, the car opened but did not release the standard immobilser (if this car has one as standard) and let the car start.

We've had this on a few of our Superbs on the cab fleet, cant remember exactly what the fault was, it is a common one though.

I'll try and remember to ask what it was when I'm out tonight.

If you could that would be great, thanks!

This problem on my old Passat was caused by the ignition key switch. If the immobiliser doesn't recognise the transponder code, the engine cranks but gets no fuel. I seem to remember GSF sell the ignition switches.

My Superb just did not crank at all, the lights didnt dim which signifys that there was no load being drained from the battery, it was as if the starter solenoid was not being fired from the low voltage side, so no battery drain.

Your observations would confirm the possibility of a faulty ignition switch. On the Passat, it was the feed to the starter solenoid (terminal 50) which was not becoming live when the key was turned to the start position, hence no start and no battery drain.

Temporarily wire and fit a warning lamp inside the car from terminal 50 of the ignition switch to earth. If you get another "no start" symptom and the lamp is not alight whilst the key is in the start position, you have a faulty switch. That's how I found the fault on the Passat.

Hi all,

This is my first posting to the group but I have been reading the posts with interest. I now have a four weeks old Superb 2.0 TDI Elegance. Apart from a poor pre-delivery inspection a brilliant car.

However, last week - Friday, parked the car, folded the mirrors. Returned later, mirrors would not unfold. Drove home and garaged the car till Sunday morning whereupon when I went out to it I could not unlock the car by the remote. I used the key but no instrument lights, no power, completely dead ! I contacted the dealer who eventually sent out a young lad with jump leads and a multi-meter, no tools ! To cut a long story short after an hour trying to start it he said there was a heavy drain on the battery and I had to get the AA Skoda rescue to recover the car to the dealers. The AA started the car first time with a power pack and off it went. The dealers then claimed that after two days testing they could find absolutely no faults and the car seems to be fine. A few years ago I would have suspected Battery Post Corrosion but that is almost unheard of nowadays and on a new battery ! Anyone got any thoughts ?

Regards Roy

I have replaced a few igntion switches but also on the Superb the solenoid comes loose on the top of the starter.

Interesting - the Passat problems live on in the Superb. I did notice when I had the undertray off that the Superb starter was a different type compared with the one on my old Passat - possibly Japanese by the look of it. I think the Passat starter was a black Bosch unit.

I would suggest that a faulty key switch would give a completely dead result, but a loose solenoid would at least "clunk" although I've not experienced this.

Hi Billy,

Did you get the cold morning starting problem fixed on your Superb?

I have a similar problem on my Fabis tdi. On the odd below freezing morning it wont start, not even a click, all the lights come on the dash as normal, heater and wiper work but starter won't even try to start engine.

Leave it a while, day heats up and it will start first time, strange.

Car runs normal other wise.

Its obvious isn't it, the car isn't ready to get out of bed on a cold morning.

Did your wife unlocked it with the key and not the remote maybe ? not sure on a superb but this is often enough to trip in the immob on a lot of cars.

Nope. Happened again this morning, cold morning again. Wife started the car as normal but after about 30sec she switch it off to get something she had forgotten from the house, came out but car wouldn't start, didn't even try to start but all dash lights came on as usual.

I came home at 5pm, car started fine, I even switch it off and put the lights heater etc on and it started as normal.

Just seems to happen when very cold, about -0 c.

Anybody got a clue

It's a Fabia 100bhp TDI (52)
