Pretty good guess. Just had a quick search around and best I could find was
I really fancy a decent tripod, I

The manfrottos have a plate that fits to the bottom of the camera. I believe they have more than one plate configuration (for SLR / Medium Format etc) but you would choose a compatible head with the monopod so should have no problem. Spare plates cost around

Ok, reason I want long exposure is mainly that most of my pictures are taken at night and/or in very dark places, its all very well using a 15 second exposure and a torch but that can lead to getting caught!! it also doesn't give a true colour of whatever i'm photographing, either yellow with a normal torch, or blueish with an LED one, these can make nice picture in there own right, but sometimes I want more natural ones, I love moonlit pictures, it's such a nice light.

I will be using tri-pod obviously for the majority of shots, but I need everything to be quite compact, and easy to carry around, lugging different lenses etc isn't really an option when I'm climbing under/over fences and generaly going through places I really shouldn't be!

You'd be amazed at how well pictures come out in a pitch black room when you just leave a camera in there for 20 mins or so! looks like daylight sometimes.

Doing a bit of Urban Exploring , are you?

JJH you seem to be making a bigger and bigger case for a DSLR. You are obviously demanding in the spec and quality that you require and I think (imho) you really do need a DSLR. The old 350D Canon and the new small Nikon can both be had for

John - what the hell are you going to be taking pictures of?!! ;)

Steve

Which one did you go for Taz? Was that including the head?

Steve

I bought a 190 PROB with 486RC2 head from T4 cameras,

Yeah, urban exploring is where its all at!

I'd be really upset if I dropped £400 worth of DSLR though, not to mention the lenses I'd need!!

I'd still be upset if I dropped £200/£250 worth of camera but I wouldn't throw myself off a roof!!

And as mentioned, the risk of dust on the sensor when changing lenses is to great I think, some of these places require breathing masks theres so much dust/asbestos in the air!!

Well, if you'd be happy with a compact or bridge with a fixed lens, why not buy an entry level DSLR and a single lens (18-200 or similar) and leave it on the camera (you don't have to use more than one, just because you can!)?

For long exposures, as others have noted, you'll find the small sensor cameras generally perform poorly wrt. noise; in addition to the small sensor sites generating noise, they also get hot during long exposures which generates even more noise.

I thought the sensors were self cleaning?

Thanks Chris:thumbup: . I also like the look of those Gorillapods, but I don

Hi John

From this, I would suggest you are better off staying with film. DSLR sensors will all noise up quite badly in 15 minutes. You may get better results from image stacking, an astronomers technique for photographing low luminosity stuff like nebulae.

I know someone tat does a lot of "old industrial" type work around disused factories and he uses a Nikon D2.

The tripod choice was made because the head has small handles that dont snag easily in undergrowth.

Chris

The UE I do would need to be waterproof...

warehouseexpress have the gorilla pods on special at the moment.

Also, I can get hold of cheap sony hybrids too if anyone wants one ;) Can get alphas too but obviously being slr, it's a bit more

How much can you get a DSC-R1 for?

I noticed it has a 3 minute bulb mode.

DSC-R1 is just under £435 inc vat

The Gorillapod SLR-Zoom will support up to 3kg so should be OK except for silly money lenses

Quite fancy one, but also want a proper tripod too. Decisions...

ooooh this sound groovey-thanks

DSC-R1 is just under
Spectacularly good price. Do you get deals on alpha system lenses and accessories?

Chris

Yup Chris. Just had a look in my little shop, and they have a few in stock.

I'll PM you the prices

Blimey, that really is a good price, I'm seriously tempted, I didn't want to spend that much to be honest but I find it hard to resist bargains!
