15 year old "hot" cars. Any good ones left?

Featured Replies

You cant beat these old cars for fun, they may not be as fast or handle as well as modern cars, but it feels like your doing a million miles an hour!

It's so much easier to be brave and learn the limits of the vehicle, as if it all goes wrong you not really going that fast so your less likely to die, and the car isn't worth much so it wont bancrupt you either!

Parts are so easy to get hold of and so much cheaper than for modern cars, what with tonnes of second hand tuning parts on E-Bay for most cars as well!!

I've owned loads of these old cars, it's so much fun, my current 2 bangers are an Alfa 75 3.0 V6 and a Rover SD1 3.5 V8 Supercharged!!

I've owned them all nearly though, from Golf GTi's and 205's too integrale's etc etc, never really lose any money on them either as they've all depreciated about as far as they are gonna! never paid more than a grand for any of em!

My mate at college had a Fiat Strada 105tc it was great fun. But he really wanted the Fiat Strada 130 tc Abarth that was supposed to be a fine car. When i was at school a bloke in our village had a Lotus Sunbeam that was a great looking car.

What about a Lotus Carlton don't know if that is old enough though.

I had the Strada 130TC ‘Snortmonster’ it was fab and blew the doorhandles of the then hot hatch brigade, ie Astra GTE and Golf GTi. Trouble was it sounded so rude, that every one always thought you were wanting to try it on with them at the traffic lights. Which of course I always felt would have been rude to refuse.:D;)

Had an X1/9 and it was fab too. I know a guy with a fairly mint, straight one, very late model and he’d sell it for the right mone

ALwyas fancied a 206 1.6 (sweeter than the 1.9 I thought) or a 309 1.9 GTi

I also had a Clio 16V that was tweaked and it was great fun. have you thought about a Clio Williams? they are superb

Did you sell it or did it fall apart at the traffic lights.

By the way what is wrong with willberpog?

Well the boot rusted off after a couple of years or so and the electrics were next to useless. and lets not forget the screws and washers that used to appear on the passenger footwell carpet

Hows about an old MX5?

They can be had pretty cheaply and are reckoned to be fairly bullet proof.

I've probably said it before but I can definitely vouch for an Mx5... I have a 1995 1.8is (slightly modified) example as my daily driver and yes they are damn nigh bullett proof. They came out in 1989 so can be got relatively cheaply and are a cracking drive. Definitely worthwhile if you can get away with 2 seats and for a couple of grand you can be looking at about 200bhp in something that weighs less than a ton.:D

Lancia Beta Volumex? Lancia Thema Turbo ie or 8.32?

Chris

Those supercharged Betas were as rare as hens’ teeth, I wonder if any still exist? I remember the Thema when it came out, same engine as the Ferrari but with a conventional crank instead of a flat plane one. They might not have rusted away yet. I loved my Beta partly because it was so pretty. Fiat 124 was a pretty car too, but a little before my time

So your Skoda's quicker or handles better than a 6R4 then? :D

I'd have one

The 6R4 being the ONLY exception.

Wouldn't fancy going on holiday on one though, and there's no room for me dog.:D

No climate control.

No leccy windows.

No cruise control.

I think I'll stick with my Octy thanks.

I had a Strada Abarth 130tc as well. Driving it was like trying to quell a riot, but good fun though.

I sold it due to insurance going through the roof in 1989, and before it fell to bits.

Wish I could've kept it and only brought it out on sunny days though.

I'd love an old 131 sport, or more so an abarth rally version, but the sport is so rare anything worth buying would be big money, and I hate to think how much a Abarth rallye would go for!

Wish I'd thought about the old Strada abarth before I bought my Rover for the Scumball rally, it'd make a fantastic Scumball car!

I had a Thema 8.32 once, sounded absolutely awesome with it's Ferrari V8, but was ultimately slower than my mates Turbo one!

Had a Renault 19 16V too, that was a laugh, fairly nippy, 70mph in second gear no problem! back end was VERY loose though!

Ooooh the 131, that was a great alternative to the RS2000 (another car that I always fancied) I remember going for a blast with a friend in a Renault 19, 16V and it was an excellent car to throw about.

280 Brooklands or a Tickford Turbo Capri :D rear wheel drive fun, now appreciating in value? OK 20 years old at best but gimme gimme

Ive had a Brooklands , Ill dig up some pics in a bit , gorgeous car , lovely colour and full leather interior...mmmmm! You won't find a Tickford in good nick for much under

Missed out just on a D plate Corolla GTI in a rare black a few years ago. Only a sale on mine that had fallen through stopped me getting it:(

I love the Chevette HS and the Lotus Sunbeam, but they go for stupid money now as does the Lancia Delta HF Turbo and Integrale...I loved the Martini edition.....bloke nearby owns one

Still think a MK1 Golf is pure character though

I've a friend in Italy thats currently got an early 16v Integrale, keeps hassling me to fly out and drive it back to England for him, very tempted but he wants to sell it when he gets it here, sadly they are worth more in Italy than they are here so I've told him not to bother.

Mk1 Golf gti is a fantastic car, but I cant help liking the big bumper MK2 more for some reason?

A Mk1 Cabriolet would be a great toy, though it wont handle as well as a tin top obviously, but as stated, much newer examples can be picked up as the cabriolet stayed in MK1 form even whilst MK2's were being produced!

Dont bother with the Pulsar or Sunny GTir, they aren't worth the money, I had one and the handling is sh*te to say the least, they are also very heavy and the chassis and bodyshell ridiculously flexible, they will pull reasonable 0-60's due to the 4wd but need ££££'s spent to make them fast, you'd be better of with a 180 or 200sx with a better version of the same engine, no interwarmer on top of the engine and RWD!!

Clio 16v or Williams gets my vote...inexpensive (16v cost me a grand when I bought it) to buy and you can make them look mint again with a bit of TLC.

This was my Clio (my best mate Andy has got it now), Its running a Spider race engine...a little special F7R from Nick at Hill Power (170 bhp), It had new arches cut it, to get rid of the devilish rust :(, a complete respray in original 449 Williams blue, with a couple of body mods (de-lock and de-badge), lowered 55mm on the front and 35mm on the back, the usual 'breathing' mods and then my OZ's plastic coated in Anthracite. I usually ran it stripped as well, to shed a few more pounds!

Was the best car I owned for fun factor and ill stand by that any day....and fast would have been an understatement...traction was the biggest problem though.

Pics to wet your appetite and ill upload an exhaust clip for those that want a little listen to ha ha!

Clio Backfire

:)

Agree with the Pulsar comments.

They need money and effort ploughed into them. They are fairly fragile for a Jap car and need lots of TLC to make them bomb proof. Top mounted intercooler causes overheating problems so need converting, clutches and gearboxes like to wear quickly too..blah blah blah!!!

Great cars though, I done my homework a while back as I was going to get one then found more negatives than positive.

Pulsar is one of those cars that everyone loves, until they own one!

Complete opposite of Italian cars I find, i.e. Everyone hates Italian cars until they own one!

I do like the Clio, but I think it's still in the boy racer category at the moment, when it's a bit older and there are less of them round, particularly when all the cha*ved up ones have been crashed, it'll make an interesting purchase.

I like cars that make people think 'Oh look it's an old Alfa (or whatever), haven't seen one of them for years'

Gotta be a car that was really something in its day!!

As promised , heres a couple of older car options with some pics.

Car 1 280 Brooklands Capri: 160BHP , rear wheel drive with full leather recaro interior-my car had the following mods - Koni adjustable dampers , lowered/uprated front springs , lowering blocks on the rear leaf springs , Janspeed tubular manifolds and full exhaust system and a K&N panel filter.

Both pics taken in 1999 , when the car was 12 years old.

Car 2 Mitsubishi Lancer GTi-16V 1.8 1992. 140 ish bhp (The earlier 1.6 had approx 125BHP) , but rare as hens teeth. Electric windows mirrors sunroof and CL.

My car had 15" Compomotive MOs, PI lowering springs , a Superchip , Momo Carbon Steering Wheel , and Momo Carbon/Chrome gearkn0b , Blaupunkt R/C with 10 disc changer , and Blaupunkt replacement component speakers.

Pics were taken in 1998 , when car was 6 years old.

Probably just the noise of the knackered transfer gear. The gearboxes on these were never rated to cope with the torque.

All my mates years ago were into these. Fiat Croma Turbo was up there too in terms of speed. The 131 Sport was my favourite of them all, in Racing Orange........
