im 6 " 6 and can fit in one :D

Wow you're f*ckin' huge man.

I have been looking on the Autotrader website. There is a W reg (2000) Fabia 1.4 16v, it has done 38000, with all the added features, CD player etc.....They are asking for

I would recommend a skoda favorit \ felicia or a ford KA all good fun all cheap enough to buy and run. Dont believe for a second that the money you spend has any bearing on reliability. A far better guide to reliability is to take someone with a lot of experience with cars with you.

Ford Ka or Corsa 1.0 12v.

felicia???

seconded! the felicia is the daddy of all "first Cars":D

Wow you're f*ckin' huge man.

Yeah.. Im like nearly a giant :D

Dont get a Ford KA.. If u have an accident you will die - hardly any crumple zone!!

Fair play - better idea going for sumthing that was a little bigger though right? im sure skoda made a nice tank at one stage :D

Go drive one - much more fun to drive than anything Skoda have produced, imho, and with a 3* EuroNCAP score about on a par with other cars of its age ;)

Chris

Fair play - better idea going for sumthing that was a little bigger though right?

Size isn't everything with car safety - a large engine bay is not the same as a large crumple zone either!

Rob.

Yeah.. Im like nearly a giant :D

What are you on about???

Erm in the same way that any small car doesn't have crumple zones you mean?

Only they do! Yes they might be shorter, but they are designed to dissipate force just the same. They will probably drop the engine on the floor and crumple a lot, but they will crumple until they hit the rigid crash cage.

Saying a ford Ka has no crumple zones is a complete lie, and I have seen somebody walk out a badly damaged ford Ka where the front crumple zones were well utilised!

As for the £100 car comment about being expensive to run that isn't true in many cases, only when you buy a wreck.

I bought a car for £50 and droped in a recon engine and a radio, added some wires , then with everything in terms of maintainence and tyres etc done by a local indy since then, the car has been running over 5 years for less that £1000 all in.

That's £200 a year including buying the car and a recon engine and all servicing and parts, which isn't bad.

You can buy a car that will easily run for a year for £100 these days, you just need to be a bit careful and pick something that is simple, such as an old fiesta, an old corsa etc and just take somebody who knows a bit along.

At the end of the day the thing only has to run for 6 months to a year, so as long as the tyres are good, the thing runs and the brakes are ok I wouldn't think you will have to spend much on it.

What are you on about???quote]

Sorry didnt mean to offend - Just saying..

Didn't really want to go into too much detail - but a friend had one at college hit a curb, rolled she didn't manage to live.. shame really I miss her lots :( this could however been a one off I was just trying to pass on what I thought - after all its a ford..

I'd have to agree with the comments regarding buying a cheap old banger. Obvious reason being its less of an issue if you crash and write it off, but also, gives you good experience at getting your hands dirty doing maintenance etc. Admittedly, I don't know your background so you could be an apprentice mechanic, but I serviced all my own cars, and did little jobs on them up until my current car, its a handy skill to have.

Not too long ago we were in a simlar situation with the eldest, she was 17 at Chrimbo. WE did much searching and checking, and basically found that cheapest cars meant big insurance, and not much less than newish cars. We eventually found a Micra, on a V reg. The car is insured in her name, fully comp and as a provisional driver and that cost £1k, the car cost £1.5k. Total cost was about the same as cheap heap and mega insurance.

It may not be "hip", but she actually prfers her Micra now to the instructer new Fiesta as she can see all points of the Micra, as well as being lighter to drive.

She initially wanted a Fiesta or Corsa. Insurance costs were very much the biggest decider.

At least this way she has a reliable car (when are Micra's not?) cheap to run and insure (compared to other cars) and helps her build up some no-claims (hopefully).

End of the day, as a newly passed driver she will only have 6 points before her license is lost, and retest required. 30mph is the same in any car.

thanks all...All advice has been taken and im hopefully gonna start looking around the garages and online and i will tel you what car i have ended up with....im hoping its a Skoda so i can ask loads of advice :D

My only real claim to fame here.....When the Fabia first came out in 2000 I bought a 1.4MPI Classic Fabia and at the age of 24 was the youngest person on the Isle Of Wight to own a new Fabia...how about that then!!!

My insurance then was about

Funny EuroNCAP don't agree with you there!

Chris

I think not.......

'The Ka is therefore not good at protection the legs and feet of the driver with a high risk of serious injury in these body regions'

Sorry i dont want to die....

The KA is pretty safe compared with other cars designed at that time.

That is all the Euro NCAP says.

There is an interesting theory that if people know they are likely to die in a crash, eg you put a big spike in place of an air bag, they drive a lot safer ;)

I still thin the banger is a worth while car, as you can build up a years no claims. If somebody dents it, or you hit a post reversing, or it gets keyed you won't claim, which allows you to build up a years no claims making the insurance on a decent car much cheaper.

That plus IMHO it is a good thing to learn to drive in a car without all the toys such as ABS and ASR/ESP, as there may come a time when the safety feature on your car fails to work, at which point you need to know what to do.

HTH

Sorry i dont want to die....

Then stay in bed for the rest of your life :P Top Gear demonstrated what a 5* EuroNCAP car was like when it was hit by a train so even the safest cars aren't that safe!!!

Chris

There are other perfectly good cars out there that dont have a Skoda badge on them.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?

Chris

Stop it Chris,

Everyone knows that with your "danger to others on the road" driving ability you have the mundeno is more than enough fo r you :P

What about an Octavia? Especially if you are erm, larger framed :)

I've just done a search nationwide with a 2k budget and there are 26 cars dotted around the country. Sometimes the bigger 'family' cars can work out cheaper on insurance than smaller typical first cars. A 1.4 (maybe even a 1.6) Octavia would I guess be a lot less of an insurance risk than a MK2 Astra, which I believe is one of the most stolen cars in the UK.

Set aside 30 minutes and run some different cars through confused.com or elephant.co.uk to give you a better idea.
