2.0 FSI and Bleeping Stream questions

Hi all - this is my first post, although I've been browsing this forum for some time.

I bought a new 2.0 FSI Octy Elegance in November 06, and have been delighted so far. I do have a question for other 2.0 FSI (non-turbo) drivers, though. I've noticed that the engine is quite rough at anything under about 1500 rpm. This is most noticable as a vibration as I release the clutch when pulling away from a standstill (unless I give it considerable revs). Is this normal??? (Please note - it isn't clutch judder - definitely engine vibration.) Any thoughts from other 2.0 FSI owners? I'm really happy with the engine in all other respects - fuel economy is great, performance pretty good, and it uses zero of the liquid gold VAG calls oil.

Second reason for this post is that my Stream MP3 unit gave an ear-splitting beap on my way to work today, and then went silent for the rest of the trip. Head unit seemed to be fine, but no sound. It started working again after I turned off / on the ignition. Is this a known issue?

The FSi could be described as a little harsh I think. Its due to the nature and design of the engine I think. As the direct injection petrol engine is more akin to a diesel in its design higher cylinder pressures and the speed of combustion means it has inheritied a little of the 'diesel' knock.

Plus points are better fuel economy, better combustion and lower emission (aside from Nox emissions hence the need of a second catalyst and sensor).

Thanks for the reply. What I'm experiencing is engine vibration (transmitted presumably through the engine mountings and / or drivetrain) which is very noticable when pulling away from a standstill. I'm quite fond of the diesel-like properties of the FSI engine - torque is also good.

At idle, there is no vibration at all - everything very quiet and composed. It is as soon as I raise the revs and the clutch starts to bite (circa 1000 - 1500 rpm) that the vibration is noticable. If I raise revs higher, it disappears, but I don't want to pull away quickly every time...

I've had the same thing happen with my Stream once (in 6 months). I just put it down to a glitch - maybe a software upgrade will be required/available at some point?

I'm not that bothered by it - but it would be a pain if it happened on a motorway or somewhere I couldn't restart the engine quickly.

Still not sure if my engine "roughness" on pulling off from a standstill is "normal" for the FSI or not... any comments from anyone else?

I don't know if this is the same thing but I have always found that as I let the clutch out in bottom gear, to pull away, I have to be very careful to adjust the engine revs upwards or there seems to be a much more pronounced "dip", and chance of stall, as the drive takes up. I've had the car 20 months now and I haven't adjusted to this - I don't think it is my driving technique either!!

I wondered if the 2.0FSI has a high ratio bottom gear and that it is more like pulling away in second gear in other cars.

I've noticed exactly the same thing - most modern vehicles seem to have a stronger "anti-stall" in the engine management. The 2.0 FSI needs more careful clutch modulation, because there is a tendancy to a sudden dip in revs if you're not careful.

Don't want to give it a bad rep - in other respects, it's a great engine.
