Smokiest Diesel

Featured Replies

I've not really noticed before as I have spent most of my time driving at night since I got my car and have only filled up with Walmart and Sainsburys fuel to date.

But leaving work early tonight I noticed how smokey the car is.

I have now ordered some millers and am waiting for that to arrive so hopefully that will make a difference and have vowed to now only fill up with 'premium' fuels but does anyone have an opinon on what is the smokiest fuel?

Asda/Walmart, Tesco, Sainsburys etc:eek:

And what is the least smokey?

Shell, Texaco, BP etc

I think it's common practice for all Fab VRS's to be smokey, but mine doesn't seem too bad at the mo and I use mainly Tesco/Asda diesel.

From what I've read on Brisky, I don't think Skoda recommends the diesel additives (such as Millers) though...

shell extra and BP ultimate will smoke less in my experiance, but I have my EGR valve turned down to minimum, and now I can't make my car smoke, even if I try!

There is very little difference with the fuel. Most of it comes from the same place regardless where you buy it. Morrisons is Texaco.

It's an urban myth that supermarket fuel is any less quality that "Branded" fuels, it all conforms to EN 590. There may be some differnce in the cetane ratings but thats about it. Sometimes you may get a bad tank (If you fill up after the tanker has been) where a lot of the crap and water that sometimes get into the fuel are stirred up rather than sittin on the bottom but this can happen with any brand. Don't waste your money on BP Ultimate you will never see that 2p per litre gain.

If your VRS is smoking more now than what it used to check the air filter, it could be a bit blocked.

I have the pd160 intake fitted with a K&N filter plus a full turbo back milltek exhaust with sport cat. My car hardly smokes at all!! I run it on either texaco or total. Depends which station is nearer when I need to refuel.

Not sure what's up with mine, but I'm on my 2nd tank of Tesco diesel (without Millers) and the car is up 10mpg according to the computer

I've always thought Tesco fuel was good with Texaco a close but more expensive second best. I've always had a vag car so maybe something to do with that - or my mis-perception and urban myth...

Driving technique will also affect the amount of visible reek you chuck out the back, I can do it when I fancy or not when the polis' are behind me ;)

As far as Tesco goes, I have it on fairly good authority that they renew their supplier's contract once a quarter, so presumably what you're filling up with could be different depending on who they're getting the stuff from throughout the year... At the moment, I'm preferring Shell to Tesco.

That's very interesting - I've always used Tesco as it's the closest and cheapest to me, and they do Pay @ Pump :D Never noticed anything like this before so either they've switch supplier or my driving has gone a bit Grandad

I filled up at Texaco a few weeks ago at the same time i put 17" wheels on my car, at first I thought the extra rolling radius had killed off the performance and economy, trying as hard as i could to drive like a grandad on a long run I was stuggling to get 40mpg.

Turns out it must have been dodgy fuel, filled up at Shell and all was well again, back to 40+mpg with a good mix of driving and around 50mpg indicated taking it easy. I'll definitely be sticking with Shell. :D

Mine seems to like Shell extra the most. If I use tesco city diesel or alike it seemd to smoke alittle more, feel alittle rough and not do as much MPG.

To be fair my smokes most of the time.

I've decided to worry less about smoke now after seeing videos of tuned Tractor pulling on YouTube.....

My vRS don't smoke too much anyway though

One question...would fitting the PD160 air intake effect manufactureres warranty by any chance? Same with Audi TT brake conversion??

Yes as you're replacing the warrantied parts :P The scope of how much this affects the warranty is likely to be down to the dealers discretion, eg if your seat base fails, is that as a result of the mods?

Cheers mate, makes sense!

September 2008 it is then...

Mine is being fed on Shell Diesel Extra and it seems to be better for it, although there is nothing better than seeing a VW Golf GTI in the rear mirror consumed by smoke.
