Featured Replies

Hello All,

I was in a Skoda dealership recently having some warranty work done on my VRS recently and got chatting to one of the sales people.

I was interested to see what they would offer me trade in for my car, it is a 56 plate with approx 8.5k mileage and lots of extras, Race Blue, 18 inch alloys, Maxidot, Reverse parking sensors, Jumbo pack, Cruise control and I have also self fitted the MFD 2 Sat Nav thanks to guidance on these forums.

Anyway he came back and said

the thing is, a large part of the difference betwwen what you paid for the car and the offer you got is VAT and the regestration fee and very few dealers will offer you some of that back given that they need to make a profit themselves.

you were offered £14k

the pre-VAT price of a basic tdi vrs is £15,320.85

so a loss of £1,320.85 is not too bad.

I can't decide whether I'm just depressed or really depressed:(

Its just a fact of modern car ownership I'm afriad.... if you really do find it so hard to take, then your best bet would to keep your VRS for a good 3-4 years and get your value from it !!!

When you come to change buy a car that's nearly new to a year old, then someone else will have taken the financial hit your so gutted about at present

Are you actually thinking of selling your car? If not, it's a moot point. You've got a nice car which you can enjoy for a while, the car's depreciation curve will start to level off after the initial dip. You surely must have known before buying that you lose a lot immediately after buying new?

Feel bad for me instead, I've just paid the deposit on a vRS Octavia in Race Blue this morning, the same car as yours :) But I'm not bothered!

Dave.

Its not that bad tbh... The depriciation is irrelevant unless you want to change.

I flogged a 1 month old Corsa for £8k 29 days after paying £9650 for it. List price was £12795.

I'm in the same boat. Going brand new and I try not think about it but it really gets to my partners head. (Glad she wasn't there when I made the purchase).

My car would have cost over 20K when new. I bought it as an ex demo Dec 05 when it was seven months old for 16K.

The VAT theory is rubbish IMO. If that was the case then in theory you would lose 17.5% even if you sold it with less than 100 miles on the clock.

Dealers will usually offer bottom book on any trade in. Book price is based on supply and demand. If demand was high for second hand Octavia VRs's then you would get a better trade in.

It is true that a car will lose more in the first year but it will it level off usually in year 2 and 3.

At the end of the day if you want a better investment put the money in the building society.

My local dealer is paying a good price part ex due to lack of stock to sell.

This is true, to be offered

The VAT 'story' sounds like a convenient cop out they reel out!!! if it was true why would nearly new Minis/Audi TT's sell for near list. That level of depreciation is due to the fact dealers want about 2-3K mark up on most cars in that bracket and yours would need to be priced cheaper than a discounted new one. My used
