Quick 312mm brake question

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have just had my 312mm brakes fitted. The mechanic who fitted them for me said they should have come with brake pad shims. Is this correct as they weren't in the package I got. I'm a bit gutted because he noticed that my wishbone bush has had it whilst tightening up the carriers!!

Nope, no pad shims on the 312's

 Thanks mate. Anyone know the part number for the bush, looked like the front one.

Be suprised if it is the front one, never seen a knackered one.

If its the rear one have a serch for the Cupra bush upgrade.

there will be a degree of movement in the standard rear wishbone bush , this is normal and is only a problem if the bush is split a large amount

cupra bush part number is 6LL 407 183 , a certain amount of dismantling is involved , plus you require a special tool to fit them

Ok, will have a check to see if it's split. Has anyone else noticed how much the weight of these brakes affects the performance:eek: Wasn't expecting that much difference!

It's because they're one piece discs. Fitting larger brake discs like this will effect things in a number of ways. Firstly the increased wieght will add to the un-sprung weight of the wheel, hub, strut assembly which will effect handling (this may be negligable and un-noticeable, but it will effect it). It will effect the cars acceleration in two ways.

One is the increase to the overall wieght of the car (again likely to be negligable). But the other effect that people rarely think about is the mass of the disc as a flywheel. The greater mass it has (exacerbated by it's larger diameter) will increase its inertia under acceleration and deceleration, so it will take your car longer to overcome the increased inertia (accelerate slower). Adding a couple of kilos to the flywheel on the engine will have the same effect.

But then again it could be as negligable as the other effects and I could be barking in the wrong woods let alone up the wrong tree!!!!

You could be experiencing the inverse of the psycological "cone filter effect".....

"It's got an induction kit fitted so it must be faster!!!"

You could be thinking it weighs more and feeling something that isn't really there....??

(can you tell i'm half way through a mechanical engineering HNC at the moment?! Sorry if i sound like some stuck up tw*t who thinks he knows more than he does!!!)

The funny thing is, a bloke who's finished his HNC told me it feels slower!!

Well I have a HND in motor vehicle engineering :P

All i noticed was the steering felt a little heavier.

Didn't you have Brembo's though......possibly lighter?

Have had both and fitted many 312's.

Well, I can only say I am pretty sure it's no placebo. I don't doubt what you say as I know you are THE MAN when it comes to fabia's but I can only say how it felt to me.

;)

Stock is getting low of the 312 set up....

Stock is getting low of the 312 set up....

thats ok mine is ready to fit ,

in my shed :o

Sir, i doff my hat to thee!!!

No need, no need really.

Did you not have to do engineering science?? Radius of gyration of flywheels etc???
