Fabia Elegance

Featured Replies

I am getting a Fabia 1.9TDi Eleagance on March 1st. As it has alloys does it come with anti theft wheel nuts as standard, or will I need to buy these?

Thanks,

Paul

They should be standard fit if the wheels are oem

Hi Ceepan,

Welcome to (almost) Skoda ownership.

As has already been said, locking wheel nuts should already be fitted, but you should be aware that the Skoda type as fitted are not very secure.

You can get peace of mind by investing

Is it just me, living in my tranquil lack of crime area, that thinks the days of thieving alloy wheels and leaving cars on bricks is a problem of the past, not of the present? I've not heard of anyone having alloy wheel theft problems since the mid-90's when alloy wheels on cars were relatively uncommon compared to today...

Anyway - I used Skoda locking nuts on my 17s which were fine for where I was (small peace of mind) but if you live somewhere a little more dodgy perhaps uprated locking bolts would be a good idea.

It's just got me confused as I've not heard of alloy wheel crime really being a problem now... Comes from living where I do I suppose.

I believe there is still wheel theft going on, but these days they aren't targetting XR3i clover wheel style 14" wheels, but gert big 17"+ wheels and tyres.

Dave.

Hi Jason,

Isn't it nice that you live such a sheltered life in that little corner in Devon!!

The rest of us have to face up to the big bad world! - seriously, I still hear a lot about alloy wheel theft - usually the more exotic type, but not necessarily.

I guess it depends how you use your car as well - I travel quite a lot on business and leave my car in hotel and airport car parks, so I guess have a much higher risk of being targeted by scumbags. :(

If the supplied ones aren't Thatcham approved and I was to fit Thatcham approved ones, would this reduce my insurance premium?

FYI I already own a Fabia (SDI comfort) that I am trading in for the Elegance TDi. This is putting my premium up by

Hi Paul,

I have absolutely no idea on that one, but it has to be worth a try!

John.

Jason, the last car I saw on Bricks was oh, now 4 years ago, and was an Audi TT, parked in an inner city area.

I doubt you'd have problems with 14" Skoda Alloys, infact the caps over the alloys are a right pain in the **** to get off . I got the alooy's with locking nuts as standard with the car.

OK.. time to post my Brainless Question of the Month...

How do you tell if you've got locking wheel nuts? What do they look like? I suspect I haven't but wouldn't know them if I saw them. Presumably I'd have been supplied with some sort of key if I had them. I have the standard 14" alloys.

Lousy wheel thief I'd make.

Difficult to explain without good pictures but in for a penny...

You see the nuts are all 'normal' 50p shaped except for one. This is the locking one and is at the top. It is round and has running all the way round it a slight cut in it, which are different shapes for different nuts, in which a special key that you have fit's in to allow it to take it off.

Just make sure that you actually get the plastic caps with the standard alloy wheels! After 5 weeks the dealer is still trying to get a set. They were missing when the car was supplied new. Apparently they are in great demand, that's why they are on back order from VW's. They are actually identical to the ones fitted on VW Passat standard alloys.

Phew. I'm glad I still have mine from my old set of wheels... Although IF I get what I hope to I may leave the OZ caps in... actually NO, the skoda one's are going in a.s.a.p.

Good luck for the search.

Another thought about locking wheel bolts for the Fabia Elegance. All VW cars use conical taper wheel bolts - do Skoda Fabia's use straight or conical taper bolts? If they use conical taper then it will be essential to make sure that non standard locking bolts have the correct taper. I'm afraid that it's too cold at the moment to actually go and find out on our Fabia!

My Skoda locking wheel bolts look identical to all the others, just with a different "end" to shove the key into. I'm not sure what conical even means, let alone looks like.

Speaking of cold, snowing in Exeter pretty well - looks like it's not settling well though so my commute home is not in jeopardy.

Yes, it's not very obvious on VW bolts. I'm referring to the part of the bolt that seats on to the wheel, the part immediately next to the bolt thread. It's obviously tapered but on VW bolts it's not a straight taper; the taper is slightly curved outwards (i.e. convex) whereas the seat taper on the wheel is slightly concave. It's difficult to explain - when I get a chance I'll post a photo.

For what it's worth, this is a shot of my left front wheel.

One of the bolts does look slightly, but not drastically, different.
