Time for some new rubber

Featured Replies

I've just replaced original fit Dunlop Sportmaxx with same again (front only) at 15000 miles. They said that the extra load rating wasn't absolutely necessary given the conditions under which I drive my VRS. The change of tyre has eleviated the vibration 70 - 80MPH.

Incidentally they also noted that directional tyres ((Sportmaxx) have a tendency to cause vibration when worn so when these latest ones are shot I will revert to a full set of trusty Pirelli P Zero. Any comments anyone?

Beano

I don't rate pirelli due to a spate of them egging the side walls on the inside wall, on various cars among people i know.

Other people love the P Zero, and if you like them then you are the best judge of tyres for yourself.

I'm also looking for new tyres and having had Falkens before looked into the 452s, I can source them (17") for

Would you agree that the F1s are the way to go at this price?

Depends what you like. I found the F1's a bit "squishy" under cornering, but other people love them. I ended up going for the Falkens and haven't been disappointed :D

Chris

Thanks for your reply Chris, any idea which will have longer life?

I suppose what I'm looking for is more grip when exiting damp A road roundabouts (I think the Bridgestones make this manouvre feel like I'm on an ice rink), that's the only situation I ever really notice any difference between tyres!

If the F1s are squishy maybe Falkens are the way to go.

Dan

No idea on the length of life I'm afraid, but I'm expecting at least 15k from the fronts and with rotation should be able to get them to 25-30k hopefully.

Falkens are just about run in now and I have lots more confidence in them than the Pilot Primacies (x2 the cost!) and Conti's they replaced, and they feel nice and sharp especially straight lining damp roundabouts ;)

I went for the Falkens in the end, fitted today by Event Tyres. I'll keep you guys posted!

Hi all.

After reading this and other simular threads I went for the Falkens on the front at £73 per tyre fitted. So far (after two days) I am very impressed with the feel on my Oct VRS.

An excellent buy me thinks

Just to confuse the issue even more. I dont own a vRS until 2 weeks today so dont know what tyres are on the car. However at my first tyre change i will be investing in a pair of Vredrestein Sportrac 3. They came out top in the Autocar Tyre test. I know people work on a budget,Myself Included, however as the car has 200bhp and is front weel drive i would not try to scrimp and scrape a few quid here and there on such an important item as Tyres. Yes i would find the cheapest dealer but for the same tyre.

I used to own a Ford Puma that i had Stage 3 turbo converted and had 256bhp at the wheels. Granted i also had a racelogic traction control system fitted to help control the power, but i had a set of Falken Tyres (ZE series cant remember exact number)put on the 17inch alloys i had and i thought they were good until i took a bend one day at 60mph (i wasnt speeding before you say it it was a national speed limit road and the bend was a bend not a corner!!) something i had done numerous times before. It had been Fine raining for about 10 mins so wasnt too wet. Anyway to cut a long story short i ended up facing the other way on the opposite side of the road (combo of traction control & ABS saved me and my car from any damage not driver skill).

I then read the autocar tyre test and at the time (2002) the goodyear eagle ventura came out as the top tyre so i fitted these at a cost of

As well as you other people have said the older falken from a few years ago were poor, but the 452 seems to be a truly good tyre, especially considering the price.

  • 2 weeks later...

After getting another 3 weeks wear out of my original fronts, which also got me to payday I finally plumped for 2 Goodyear F1s (17") for

Just taken delivery of my vRS Octavia with Michelin Pilot Exalto 2 tyres in 225/40 18 size (fitted by Event Tyres www.event-tyres.co.uk).

Having got home after a 30 mile/45 min drive I reflected on the car and how chuffed I am with it. Then thought there was something missing, tyre noise!!

Compared with the Contis fitted to my dealer's demonstrator where there was one overriding factor about the car which was tyre noise - the Michelins, whilst not totally quiet, allow you to enjoy the rest of the car.

  • 3 weeks later...

have just been looking through the forum for recommendations on two new front tyres and ive been reading about the good value falken 452's but i was wondering where people are buying these from? a few have mentioned event-tyres.co.uk but the falkens on there are

This is the cheapest place I've found for Falkens by far, supply only no fitting!.

I've heard some good things about Micheldever Tyres (you can get the number from here).

It does of course mean a trip to Winchester, but if you were in the area anyway...

thanks makefish, ill check on what i can get them fitted for locally.

think ill pass on the winchester one gwowders as im on north wales but im sure it'll be handy for others.

Although i found their tyre balancing skills are somewhat lacking on busy days and you would be better visiting your local protyre who are part of the same group and marginally more but have more time to do the balancing etc.

Just ordered 4 falken 452 tyres for my vrs based on some of the good comments seen on the forum.

Expiriencing some wear problems on the rears, outer edges wearing much sooner than the inner. Car is booked into dealer this Friday to be checked. Car has only covered 7k and all four are near the wear indicators, this is without swaping the fronts to the back

I haven't been driving the car that hard either!

Current tyres from new Conti Sport contact 2, not impressed so far with the wear rate on these for the price!

Try this link! very good pricing.

Does anybody find Bridgestone potenza r050 225-45-17 not so grippy. I can too easily spin those when accelerating hard through the first 3 gears. Quite difficult to have a clean start with those.

Are you using the correct tyre pressures?

If your tyres are over/under inflated you will not have a FULL footprint of the tyre in contact with the road and thus will get wheelspin too easily.

Yes i do, i regularly check the pressure. Still a bit too much wheel spin.
