Test drove a Superb PD100 BHP - how does this compare to a PD130?

Featured Replies

Test drove a Superb Classic 1.9 PD 100 in Coventry at the weekend.

Found it very similar to drive as my current Passat, especially as though all the switches and trim are exactly the same! Found I was aware that the car was bigger, and the ride felt different to the Passat, though I could not put my finger on it. Think it was a bit smoother than the Passat if anything.

I found the 100BHP unit to be okay low down, but seemed to lack the power in the mid range. Would the extra 30BHP of the PD130 make the difference in mid range?

I'd only be considering the PD130 anyway, but I was lucky to get hold of a diesel Superb demo, let alone a PD130.

Superbs in Comfort trim are also very hard to track down. The chap at the Coventry dealer said this was usually because any stock would be snapped up by company buyers - leaving just Classics and the odd Elegance in showrooms.

I did see one Comfort round the back of the Liverpool dealership - though that had had it's seats and trim ripped out (stolen / recovered?)

The difference between the two engines is just not just the extra 30% more BHP in the PD130, but also the massive amount of grunt in the PD130, which can help with low down power needs.

The PD100 isn't a bad unit though, and our friends Jabbasport can easily make it close to a PD150 for just

i dont know the ecact figures but i know the PD130 is a very capable unit even in a car the size of the Superb... as Devon has said the big difference is the extra torque the 130 gets over the 100, and 30bhp is alot to be fair so i'd say you'd deffinately feel the extra punch.

As I pre ordered my Furby Vrs before they we available the only 130PD I had driven was the Superb.

I was really impressed that despite the size of the car and the fact that it was an oiler at how well it pulled.

Loads of fun to drive but a bit big to park.

Perhaps the nicer ride is due to the Superbs longer wheelbase?

Superb is bigger than a Passat.....rear leg room is massive.

Its dead easy to park the Superb, those rear parking sensors make it a doddle.

As for the pd130 lump in it, mines goes very nicely thankyou

Didn't realise the Comfort had the rear parking sensors as standard

Would seriously consider the PD130 over the PD100.

I had a Passat PD100 out for a couple of days (auto box admittedly), and I found it really slow compared to (eg) the Fabia PD100 - it's quite a heavy car for a 100BHP engine, in my opinion.

Before I bought my Superb, I test drove an Octavia with the 110BHP engine and I thought that was a bit gutless on the motorway (though my previous car was a 150BHP Saab) - I tried the PD130 in the Superb (wasn't available in the Octavia or Fabia then), and to be honest, it isn't that far behind my Saab for performance. I'm happy with it as it is, if I wanted more then I could get it tweaked, but don't really see any reason to do it.

My Superb is a Classic, its got Climate, but no cruise control, parking sensors, or alloys, I'll get the cruise and parking but not too bothered about the alloys.

Wouldn't mind just having a play with a Fabia Vrs for a day though :D

It was always going to be the PD130. From a company car point of view, the CO2 is the same band for both cars, though I would pay more tax on the Comfort due to its higher list price.

Worked it out last night - I will save circa

I would definitely test drive the Honda before you do anything. It does cost more than the Superb but the new Honda Diesel is supposed to be in a different league to all other Diesel's currently on the market. You may well think the extra

If I hadn't been so wasted last night when I posted I would have probably picked that up from your original post !

Are you ready for the stick?

I chose and drive a Superb (company car, PD130Comfort), love the car but tonnes of stick from non converted colleagues in their Passat S 100PD (15"steel wheels). Seriously it's a good choice, and you're definitely right to go for the 130.

However i have also read that the new Honda Diesel is in a different league.

Let us know what you do.

Yes, the new Honda diesel even beats the BMW for smoothness, but then the new Honda is in a different league price wise to the Superb.

The PD130 feels much quicker than the PD100{which i have}.

My Superb has done 6000 miles so far and apart from the odd A-road blat ,

has been quick enough{after all you would'nt buy a Superb if you wanted a fast car}.It will sit on the motorway all day long at 85mph,and still have enough poke to overtake. Oh and average 45+mpg.

If i still have the car later this year i just might take a trip to Jabba ,then again i might get another RS. ;)
