Grinding noise from Felicia brakes

Featured Replies

Greetings all I noticed this noise for the first time last week, exactly the sort of sound you get when the brake pads are down to the metal. The strange thing is, though, I was sure they weren't - and when I checked the pads they had loads of meat left on them. In case my ears were playing tricks I had a look in the rear drums too and they were also in good order. When I got the car last year the MOT it came with had an advisory note regarding wear on the discs. Although when I took it for its test last month it passed with no advisory... that did surprise me a little as the discs are more than a bit worn, there's a pronounced lip but the wear pattern is even, no scoring and they're not warped or anything. Given that, is it likely that this noise is down to the discs being knackered? The car is a 2000 1.6GLXi. Cheers

somewhere on the edge of the disc there will be a marking telling you the minimum thickness, but it may be illegible now due to corrosion... i reckon the edge of the pad is bearing down on the 'lip' causing the noise.

Not sure what the brake set up is like on 1.6's but i suspect pretty similar to 1.3.

One thing i would check up on before getting new discs is that the sliders are actually doing their job properly and are not binding. This is really easy to check just by taking the two securing bolts for the brake caliper off and checking for a sliding motion on the sliding pins.

If they are seized like mine get some mole grips and gently work them back and out. then grease them up with copper grease and work them in and out until they have a smooth springy action to them. Also be careful not to damage the dust covers. This did the trick on my scud but it would really benefit from new discs as the fact that they were binding warped the r/h disc slightly.

Next problem is getting the two caliper mounting bolts off to remove the disc. Anyone know a way as i can't get mine off!!

I have to say that although i think Felicia brakes are pretty good (drive a Mk2 rover 200 to find out what crap brakes are!) the sliding pin design is pretty poor and susceptible to seizing if not checked regularly.

the stoppers on the 1.6 can be realy good. i'm using the ebc green stuff pads in the lucus calipers, over a zerosixty grooved and dimpled disk. put it this way, the brakes are better than the tyers.
