Is my turbo dying?

So it should not 'whine' when the revs rise or when boosting:confused:

Mine does, I thought every turbo car did. 45k miles.

Cheers Liverpool-Lad.

I was just puzzled how something designed to clean the air in the cabin whined and raised/lowered in pitch with the revs of the car:confused: Especially as its only just started doing it! Its definatley NOT a rattling/tapping sounds more like a whistling/whine.

So I guess I have nothing to worry about afterall?? This is a normal occurance with other octy users then?

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the turbo itself. My bad. Cant say Ive noticed anything else.

It's the black box on the left of your engine bay which tick's sometimes it's got 3 tubes sticking out the top

Something to do with recycling fuel fumes iirc

Yes, it is sandwiched between the coolant bottle and the windscreen washer bottle against the front offside wing.

So is it common for this to whine (like me atm!) and raise/lower in tone with the revs Dennis?

Sorry to push for an answer its just atm I'm getting conflicting reports from one dealer/mechanic to the next(one says it sounds like a belt, another says its the turbo on its way out and the latest says its the charcoal filter so finding a 'FINAL' answer is nigh on impossible.

it might well be a belt, my cambelt was making a whistly rattly noise before it got changed.

Cheers bengie although sadly I am getting totally fed up now going from one garage to the next in a vain attempt to get this sorted or get a definative answer as to where or what is causing the noise and should I be worried etc.

It passed the MOT today without a hitch so thats something I guess but the noise is really preventing me from putting my foot down until I can put my mind at rest that something aint gonna blow. IF it is the charcoal filter making the whine (which I'm hoping someone here can confirm) then I'll be a happy chap. I've done a little research that suggests the filter dosn't whine but rather taps - it definatley aint a tapping noise:confused: .

it defintly does tap and i've never heard one whine myself but that doesn't mean they don't, what we need here really is a super techie :)

My engine whistles a wee bit at low speed when the turbo's going on-off, and I've got the window open. I'd presumed that that was the turbo, since every turbo car I've ever travelled in does it.

Yeah its NOT the usual turbo whistle - I know what that sounds like after 3 years of RS ownership;).

At least Skoda UK have now heard the car and say that there is deffo an 'odd' sound that shouldn't be there but have passed me back to the original dealer as Skoda don't warrant modifications (I already knew that!).

So as it stands now its back with Lambs who gave it the original warranty 'with mods'. Lets hope they will sort it this time around now the noise has been identified by a Skoda tech. To determine what exactly is causing the noise it needs stripping down, who will pay for that - the dealer or lambs, is being discussed atm.

Just read you PM. I wasn't aware that the carbon canister made a whining noise. Yes it certainly does make a rapid clicking sound not unlike noisy tappets. Easiest thing to do is open the bonnet, start the engine and listen as someone applies some accelerator. To isolate the noise of certain components from the overall din of the engine take an implement like a long screw driver, place the blade end in contact with the suspect device and then put your ear on the other end. You will pick up the vibration from that specific item as a noise. It's a useful tool to determine if bearings are going in say an alternator. HOWEVER don't go poking around moving items like belts.

Meanwhile, I see you've added some extras to your car. Concerning those that are engine related, do the fitting of any of these coincide with this whine - perhaps something has changed the acoustics of the engine noise.

The parts were fitted by Gordon Lamb and have been on the car for the past 30k - this is a new sound that was definatley not there before.

When I took it back to the dealers they said it was the active charcoal filter that was making the noise - what they failed to mention was that the 'noise' they assumed I was complaining of was a 'ticking' NOT the whining I had told them about:mad: so that was one wasted journey.

Anyway I took the service parts manager out for a spin today and he has heard the sound that its making and admits it dosn't sound right so they are gonna get back to me on their next course of action which will hopefully be a replacement or adjustment of said 'part' to get rid of the noise. I have also taken it to an ex VW mechanic who said its most likely the turbo bearing but without stripping it down it would be impossible to identify solely on the sound alone but that was his 'best guess'.

If there isn't a satisfactory conclusion this time around then its off to the solicitors as I've quite honestly had a enough of this shambolic affair - and to think Skoda are now no#1 in the top gear customer satisfaction awards:confused:

A little update for those interested. Gordon lamb got back to me (the wife) today and 'think' that the problem is that the turbo gasket is blowing. This sounds a much more likely culprit. Hopefully this will be fixed on monday/tuesday. At last there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel:). I just pray that when I pick it up it was the problem and everything is now sorted:(

Well I went down today and the problem noise is still there even though they replaced the turbo gasket which did indeed have a split in it aswell as a loose nut allowing air to escape. They are now going to replace the turbo (finally) which will hopefully cure it. Driving round in the wifes rangie is givng me serious speed withdrawal symptoms tbh:(

Been a while since I updated so appologies for the long winded post.

The turbo was sent off to Turbo Technics for evaluation and it was eventually confirmed that the Turbo was faulty and needed replacing - told them this from the start but hey-ho.

New turbo arrived at the dealers but the 'bracket' for the turbo was missing so they couldn't fit it until they got the old bracket of my old turbo to fit to the new turbo.

Whilst fitting the new turbo they noticed the exhuast manifold had a crack in it so that was also replaced - again more delay but I'm happy they spotted it and replaced it, full marks there and goes a little way into restoring some faith in the dealership.

Picked the car up last Tuesday and felt/sounded like new again. Gave it a good run home (from chesterfield to the high peak - nice roads) and all appeared well - big grins back:D.

Next morning seemed fine but coolent temp light began to flash on the mfd 5 mins into the journey. Got to work, checked the coolant and all looked fine:confused:. Started it back up and the same again on the way home - coolant temp warning:(.

I topped the coolant up ever so slightly (although it didn't really need it at all) and same again - coolant temp warning:mad: .

Came to start it up again next morning and click-click-click - dead battery. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this point - jump started the car and everything was fine - gave it a 30 minute run in hope of recharging the battery, came to start it again at work.... click-click-click:thumbdwn:

Reading here I feared it was the alternator that could have died so I took it to ATS yesterday to get them to do a battery and alternator check - battery was 'borderline' but the alternator was fine, thank God. Battery replaced, Bosch 027UR(6PN) iirc and problems have now dissapeared.

So items replaced in the last month are :

Insurance

Tax

MOT

Dogbone mount

Full service

Brake pads (Front&Rear)

Brake discs(Front&Rear)

4 new tyres

Turbo

Turbo gasket

Exhaust manifold

battery

Its been an expensive month but hopefully this will be the last of my problems for a while.:o My confidence in the make has taken a serious knock and although I still love the car I can't help but think of what else is going to go wrong with it:(

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks for the heads up on this problem. My car has started making exactly the same noise - a whistling sound at 1000 to 1500 revs before the turbo spools up properly.

At least I know what it is from this post. Will be contacting the dealers shortly.

  • 2 years later...

mines beginning to sound like this too. a whining leaking noise (not turbo boost) that does indeed sound like radio interfernce. best get saving for a new turbo!

the key is to find why the turbo is failing as 9 times out of 10 its a problem else where that fecks the turbo. so check your oil lines and coolant lines etc etc

not cheap replacing the turbo £550 + fitting

why did you not get turbo technics to repair the old turbo?? as they would have had it stripped would have cost loads less....also mannifold cracking is so so common most cars will have a cracked manni part and parcel of cast and extreme temps.

wow just realised this is a proper old thread lol

useful though, saves me from opening a new one!
