vRS Brake upgrades

Featured Replies

Has anybody upgraded the brakes on their Octavia vRS?

If so, what have you done? What did it cost? How has it affected the stopping power, ABS, ESP etc?

Thanks in advance for your responses!!!

I've not upgraded the brakes on my Octy II as I haven't got it yet! I can't either as it is a co. car.

However, whenever I have done them on previous cars (including an Octy I) I have noticed the following.

1. Better pads and discs give you more repeatable braking i.e. less fade, especially when coupled with a high boiling point fluid.

2. Bigger diameter discs do the same as above and give you more retardation!

3. In all the Imprezas, Octys and Clios I've owned, the OEM brakes have been good enough to stop the car in the dry and kick in the ABS. So, the tyres are the limiting factor - not the brakes.

I upgraded the brakes in my previous cars in order to take them on trackdays. In my experience, the benefits of upgrading them for road use are for fade resistance. However, the only time I've had brake fade on the road was after a 20 min blast in the Lakes which included going down Hardknot pass in my Puma! This car had tiny little discs which could just not dissipate the heat quickly enough.

In addtion, good discs are £150-200ish, Ferodo DS2500s should be about the same and 2 or 3 litres of good fluid (Motul 600 or Silkolene Pro-Race) will be about £30.

Where you meaning Caliper and Disc combination Ants?

Planning something special for the white ones - you know the standard ones but a little bit faster. ;)

I think Dan has upgraded his Leon with a Caliper and Disk combination. Shifty has had pads and Disks.

Something like that Stu.

I'm not sure what route to go down, I was just looking for people's experiences really. I think the fluid will be first thing to try.

I think Badger Bill is supposed to be good at offering Brembo Upgrades. Are you planning to retail the car once it's done?

If so then obviously the parts would have to be new and not salvaged.

Had you thought about a bodykit and some sort of WRC livery? They just need something to lift them up a little visually.

Ive fitted some AP Racing 6pots, 330mm front brakes. I only got them as it was a good second hand deal. This included the calipers, discs with grooves, and braided hoses.

Superb stopping power, you wont get much better really. Doesnt really affect any of the electronic systems either.

I do track days quite alot that how I could justify it. The standard brakes are very good though even for the occasionaly trackday.

Why are you looking to upgrade Ant?

It think the only reason you would change the fluid is if it is boiling! which isnt easy to do! I cant see ay advantage otherwise.

You haven't had the pleasure of being in a car with my boss, Dan!!!!

Hehe, I have seen a few brake boils at tracks before :D

As the Octy vRS has ventilated discs front and rear, for ordinary road use I would, IMHO, go for some uprated pads and leave it at that; Tarox, EBC or Ferodo have I believe pads to fit the vRS.

After that I would suggest you will only need uprated discs/calipers if you first do a remap to go faster!

Surely not, I mean wouldn't that have warranty implications with the supplying dealer and SUK? ;) :P

On a side note Ants, are you enjoying the cars new found power?
