whining/noisey gearbox still

Featured Replies

does anyone elses fabia vrs suffer from noisey transmission? my fabia 1.9 vrs is a 05 plate and i bought the car pre-reg. my gearbox when i had it was terrible and skoda had to replace it under warranty as there was swarf in box and a bearing had gone, they fitted a new box 7 months ago and ive done 7,000 miles with the new box. unfortunately when i collected the car the box was still whining but in different gears this time, the box had been changed as you could see the wax on it from the factory/cleaness of it. i thought maybe this would calm down but box still whistling/whining as ever. it only whines/whistles in 5th and 6th gear at about 40-50 mph and only at low revs 1500-2000.... you then can accelerate through this and noise goes away until you slow down in same gear and acclerate again. does anyone elses tranmission whistle/whine in gear?????? just worried as warranty out soon and dealer has already but a new box in it....

can anyone explain this noise??? gearbox components winding up/down???

cheers guys

I can explain it: this is a totally ****e gearbox!

my Fabia VRS has had three! the current one only howls in second and as this is the best yet I am living with it until I get a proper car (non Skoda).

Very disappointed with VRS ownership...........

I've had ZERO problems like this, had the car for 71k without as much as a peep from the gearbox, standard or mapped up. Finding it hard to believe more than one bad luck gearbox to be fair.

If you've managed to kill 3 gearboxes in the Fabia vRS then there is something wrong elsewhere causing it. It is a very solid box, used in cars throughout the VAG range, and it can cope with loads more than the engine gives off, both standard or remapped.

Very odd

I must admit my gearbox whines in second and first, Its always done it since ive had the car and hasnt got any worse in the 20k ive put on the car.

Doesnt really bother me tbh and as soon as ive got the golf finished ill make a start on the vrs and the first thing to go will be the standard diff :D

Don't have an explanation as to why the box whines other than it's a manufacturing/QC issue. Could be an inherent design flaw, but I tend to dismiss this because I've driven many other vRS's and they certainly don't whine to the same extent as mine.

My Fabia vRS is a Feb 05 with 27K and whines, most noticeably in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears in the rev range 1500/2000 in all modes - accelerating, decelerating and steady speed. In the latter the whine seems to oscillate. Outwith this rev range the whining is not evident. Incidentally, by adapting my driving style I can almost entirely negate the whining. But that's just accommodating, not solving the problem.

I've reported my concerns to the dealer and await a decision as to a replacement box.

Even if Skoda sanction a new box I'm not too sure that will be the end of the matter - there are numerous posts in here of multi-replacements for the same car, none of which have been whine-free. One of the other guys has commented on this and he makes a very valid point; possibly the problem lies elsewhere. If Skoda do agree to a replacement I'll just have to cross my fingers that he's not proved correct. Here's hoping.

Not wanting to stir up a hornets nest - but why not! VAG source lots of assembles from quite far away places - there used to be a lot of gearbox problems that were claimed to be due to very low quality control in some South African factories - even worse was the fact that quite a few RHD Golfs also found there way into UK either brought in by VAG or by independent importers. Maybe some here knows how to decode any data on the boxes just in case, like the cars, the actual factory code is included. Food for thought, never mind is'nt the new Audi TT built in Bratislava - spelling might be wrong!

Sorry if my post sound(ed) a bit harsh but it just seems odd that multiple gearboxes are all faulty in a similar way, unless more recent QC is indeed to blame.

It sounds like it's not fitted right or something, but I'm not a trained automotive engineer so I'm likely to be wrong :o

Mine whines a bit especially in 2nd. 'Box otherwise works fine and car is out of warranty so I tend to ignore it.

My TDI is in as we speak having a box rebuild, I have owned 8 VW's & none of them has ever had box trouble, mind you had this since may & had new clutch, flywheel, starter, upper (middle) brake light assembly & 2 new wheel bearings replaced.

Skoda always come well placed in surveys, not sure who they are asking to compile said surveys, but all my vw,s were not only better built but a hell of alot more reliable!

Decided to wait a few days and cover a few hundred miles before giving verdict on the new gearbox.

Apart from a slight whine in second all other gears are whine-free. Not only that, the transmission seems so much smoother and quieter.

If you are having similar problems just persist with SUK, that's all I did and it eventually paid off. The new box just highlights what an absolute dawg the old box was.
