VRs Diesel.... Are they any good?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My Superb is up for renewal in a few months, so it's crunch time!

Option 1: Get a new Superb...

Could do, but Skoda have done the dirty with the so called upgrade to the 140brake 2 litre TDi. My old 1.9 130brake had emissions of around 155 ish, the 2 litre is 173 :thumbdwn:

Also I have driven one and you definately don't get the same kick in the pants from the new 2 litre engine.

Option 2: Get an Octy VRs Diesel

Lower list price..... 30 more horses...... much lower emissions....seems a no brainer.

A couple of things concern me though. Is the Octy any good? Will there be a huge increase in road noise? Could it eat the miles like the Superb does?

Also, because I would be too tight to go for metalic paint, would a yellow VRs survive one night in a Travelodge car park?

Your comments on this dilema would be much appreciated.

I ask myself whether I should have gone for the 140 L&K rather than the 170 VRS from time to time. However, despite the relative lack of value for money and the niggly faults I've had - I would probably still choose the VRS on balance again.

Noise is a lot quieter than my MK1 L&K and when you pull out to overtake at 30 you're doing 70 before you know it in the VRS - accompanied by a good kick in the back. Not sure the leather clad, tricked up L&K will deliver the same thrills.

This is all without considering the visual impact. L&K is smart I grant you but not very exciting to look at...

My advice.... go for the VRS - you can always have an L&K auto when you're old...

I've got a VRs Diesel and think it's a great car but my advice would be go to a decent dealer and borrow their demonstrator for a day.

I have a VRs diesel too. I think it depends on the type of driving you do. It's a great motorway cruiser, with plenty of power to spare, but not quick off a standing start, so not a nippy town car. Or is that just the way that mine behaves? Others may have different views.

I've just faced a similar dilemma to yourself.

I've currently got a Superb 1.9 TDi Elegance, and was struggling to find something to replace it with.

In the end, it came down to the new L+K or the vRS TDi (in an ideal world, I would have the petrol vRS, but the tax is just too high).

Whilst I love the toys you get on the L+K, I fancied a car which would offer a bit more driver enjoyment. After the soggy handling of the Superb, I was really impressed by the vRS.

As you've already mentioned, the emissions on the new 2.0TDi Superb are awful. In addition, the lease prices have really gone up as well.

I've ended up paying

Go on be a devil - get the vRS in Red (non metallic so no extra cost). The Yellow IS a fantastic colour but as bad as Black for showing the dirt/keeping clean - you have to be very bold to go for yellow.

Road noise - mostly down to the tyres and whether you get standard 17" wheels or optional 18". Either way the factory fit Continental Sport Contact/Dunlop Sport Maxx or Bridgestones of either size are getting frequent reports of being v. noisy.

Personally I have splashed out on the B14 style 18" dealer fit wheels that have allowed me to spec with Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s that I know from using on my Fabia are (relatively) quite, plus grip well dry or wet and give good mileage.

I do not believe that the Octavia is inherantly noisier that the Superb. Size wise they are very similar and to all practical intent you are only losing rear legroom and gaining the versitilty of a hatch/estate.

Remember that the Octavia II is still quite a new car whereas the Superb is due for replacement within the next year; do you want an up to date car? IMHO, yes.

Eat the miles - a little over 2,000 rpm in 6th gear gives 70 mph. You have a 140mph car underneath you, so leagl (and illegal) cruising should be quite comfortable enough.

Power - kick in the pants - DEFINITELY. Keep the engine spinning in its powerband of 2,000 - 4,500 rpm and there is more than enough umph for all situations. The gear ratios are also really well spaced; you lose around 1,000rpm 2nd to 3rd and progressively less as you go up the box with 400 rpm less going 5th to 6th.

Summary - I don't think there is much dilema. I take delivery of my Red vRS TDI next week (all being well) - enough said.
