ESP - problem ??

Featured Replies

Okay - looks like i may need to be talking to our resident mind of information about a possible fault recently occurring with my new VRS TDi..........

VrStu - if you think you may be able to help, then please either reply or i can call you with regard to the following............

Currently on 3,500 miles. Last few times out in relatively dry conditions here on the south coast, i've noticed that if i pull away swiftly and go through the gears pretty quickly, that i am experiencing wheel spin from the tyres. Now previously i have always experienced the ESP kicking in and the usual stability (non-wheel/tyre slip) to kick in and the usual visual effect on the dash from the ESP as working (as it always had previously) and that this is no longer acting in the same manner as before.

1) Should the ESP act (when ON, as it is from initial start-up) in any wheel slip condition/s? Have definitely NOT turned off the ESP manually in any case.

2) If the ESP is not responding, then what action/s can be taken to check this?

Any help from all the great info received on this forum would be much appreciated.

Regards - John.

Too much torque to put down = wheelspin. ESP will try to cut down engine power a bit, but usually there is still too much so you'll get wheelspin regardless.

Proper actions: Expensive option is to get a torque biasing diff or similar, or cheaper, get better tyres etc and control your right foot ;)

It might be just down to the road conditions/tyre wear etc. Mine seems to 'light the wheels up' pretty easily these days.

I'll give it the once over with the laptop if you like John.

Stu - you're a diamond! And as was stated on previous posts - why can't we have service and knowledge as good as this when we approach our dealer/s for queries -mmmm:confused:

Will give you a bell later this evening if that's okay with you Stu ?

Cheers very much - John

Prefer if you could hang on till tomorrow or the weekend John. Got an exam tomorrow so I'm supposed to be revising tonight!!

Cheers for the heads-up Stu. Only just got home myself after a hectic night out with my children.

I'll give you a call at the weekend and good luck with your exam tomorrow!

thankyou - John.

I also get wheel spin at road junctions that are on an upward slope and you need to out quickly into the traffic flow. Worse in the wet so I have put it done to those noisy crappy Dunlop tires they factory fit.

The engine does have a lot of low gear torque, which does not help here, but by christ can these vehicles move thru the gears rapidly from a standing start.

Doesn't the ESP break the wheel that's spinning too fast compared to the others? Then if both front tyres spin at the same speed the ESP won't sense a problem to control. Spinning both wheels is possible, if the friction under both wheels is the same.

Well, there's just the problem of the car having four wheels. That means the ESP should sense a rpm difference between the front tyres and the back tyres. There goes the theory.. ;)

Touche' guys - pulled out of a junction yesterday in what was not so dry conditions and lo and behold, the ESP did work! Seems the theory that if both wheels slip at the same time (specifically in drier conditions) do tend to allow some spin.

Off to Stu's Skoda workshop (LOL) later today for a systems check. I'm quite confident that all is okay and will report back here when Stu has done his stuff.

Thanks for replies - John
