Repairing gas cooker

Featured Replies

One of my elderly aunts has a faulty gas cooker - the oven won't heat up. The local CORGI fitter has told her to buy a new cooker - a mere

i'd normally say unplug the cooker, fit it and don't tell anyone but the trouble is how could you be sure there wasn't a leak? i'd say buy the part and pay a man to fit it just to be safe :)

The flame failure device just shuts off the gas if, well, the flame goes out, there is normally no direct connection to the gas it just shuts off a "tap" but I still think it comes under the scope of Corgi registered........just find a nice gas fitter and get him/her to do it to play safe

Don't touch it.Period.

If anything happens, if anyone else but a registered corgi fitter fixes it, the implications could be catastrophic.

Buy her a new cooker.

My brother in law once left us without gas altogether because we had a leak, and although he was a gas fitter and could have fixed it, he wouldn't, he just turned it off and reported it.

His mate is still in prison for manslaughter, for 'fixing' a dodgy fire.

i'm sure it could be fixed without the risk of blowing the house up Mr.Grumpy.

how many people have been convicted for dodgy work on cars resulting in people being killed or seriously hurt in accidents?? yet your more than happy to have new brake pads fitted rather than buying a new car.

Different set of rules and regs. Bengie.

Any gas fitter worth his salt is approved and registered.

It may be an easy fix, but knowing a tad more than the layman on these matters, I would spend the money on either a properly approved fix, or a new appliance.

If only for piece of mind.

Please don't take this the wrong way.

just what i was saying mate, get it done right or don't bother. on a lot of things i'd say give it a go if you are confident but gas is a complete no no in my books. with water if leaks you cna see it and the worst that happens i stuff gets wet but sadly you have no such easy outcome with gas. things can either go perfect or very very bad.

If its the part Im thinking off its a thermocouple? basically it shuts off the gas when the flame goes out, but very commonly the part fails the system is pretty simple, but means whent he part fails the gas is shut off. Its basically a wire that heats up creates an electric current that holds a magnetic "tap" open when theres no current being produced due to no heat or device failure the connection is closed.

Simple device easy to fit, let the proffessionals do it. When mine went on my boiler I could see how the job was done, but I got the proffessionals to do it. I might do just about all my own work on the house, but I dont touch gas stuff.

Leave it to a registered repairer. Leaking gas will explode and incorrect burinig will create Carbon monoxide and with an oven with no flue, this can be a silent killer. I lost a good friend and her family to CO. It aint worth the risk to save a few quid fitting charge.
