Squeaking noises and star drive sockets???

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Got two problems with the Furby. Firstly it's developed a squeaking noise when turning left. This noise is similar to the noise you get when you have squeaky brakes and when your turning left and apply the brakes it disappears. I thought it was dirty brakes or something but I've been to Birmingham and back twice and the noise is still there. It happens over some bumps too. Does this sound like a wheel bearing and how much is it likely to cost to fix?

Also I'm going to put my stereo in the car and need to get hold of those 5 sided security star drive socket things. Does anyone know where I can get them from? My Halfords and Motorworld only have the normal 6 sided ones in stock and obviously these don't fit.

Any help is appreciated :)

Security screwdriver bits - Maplin or similar.

I have a similar problem with mine - a very light high-pitched tone coming from one of the rear wheels. I suspect it is a seizing caliper. It goes if I dab the foot brake or lift the hand brake slightly, and it changes depending on which way I turn. I don't think it is a bearing. I have had those go on a Mini. That is more of a scraping, screaching sound. When I changed those bearings, the case-hardening had cracked in some places on the ball bearings. When these areas were in contact, the balls didn't rotate but slid instead, causing the scraping sound.

I had a squeaking noise coming from the front of the car. Took it the dealers. Turned out to be a leaf in the disc :o

Went to Maplin they didn't have any. Will have to order some online.

Got a bigger problem now....cleaned my engine yesterday, not with a pressure washer though. Today when I accelerate, the engine sounds very rough. As though a coil pack has gone on a petrol car, that kinda roughness :s Hope it goes away!

sorry- off topic a bit, but how can it be called a "security socket" when anyone can buy it at Maplins?

lol basil the ford torx sockets are 'security' ones too but maplins, b&q and halfords etc all sell them.

I think you have to be careful in buying the right ones. The common type of torx have 6 lobes and the anti-tamper version have a small pip in the middle to stop people using the standard ones. But they also do a 5 lobed security version which i've found they used to hold the MAF in.

I've searched online and have found loads of places that sell the normal and security versions of the 6 lobed one. I have not found anywhere selling the 5 lobed version.

Snap-On do a set of 5 sided torx in varying sizes

where are the 5 sided screws that you have to undo to fit a H/U ?

the only place on the car i know where there are 5 sided torx is on the MAF sensor

Doesn't the glovebox require the 5 sided ones too? Or are they the normal 6 sided ones? I ordered the 5 sides ones to clean the MAF anyway

I just used the cheapest of the cheap 6 sided torx to get my glovebox out in order to fit wiring for an amp. In that respect I'd say a 5 sided torx is useless in that area. :)

Cool I have plenty of the 6 sided ones to use for that :)
