do uprated clutches last longer than a standard one?

Featured Replies

as above.:)

Well, it's ultimately down to driving style, and an uprated clutch will take more, like for like, than a standard one, yes. It's simply down to having a higher torque rating.

When push comes to shove though, I suspect it's relatively easy to break either of them with some serious mis-use. :)

:iagree:

it's easy to break an 'uprated' clutch if you give it plenty of stick..... most garages wont garantee fitting of such items because they know that the first thing you'll do is go buring off down the road at full pelt.

As with all things mechanical, they will wear according to use.

It will wear more quickly with abuse.

But say you treated both clutches the same but the std was is only rated to 280lbsft and a uprated 330lbsft. Which would last the longest?

who knows eh??

mormally an uprated clutch is a lot stiffer than a standard one so it require more 'stomping' of the left foot which is a right pain up the the jacksee in heavy traffic, also they tend to be a bit harder on the gearbox too which could lead to premature gearbox wear

What sort of treatment though?

Engine remapped or not?

Lets say bog standard and standing starts, heavy traffic etc.

Standard one will be probably last longer, as it's designed to handle everyday driving at standard torque levels.

Standard will be better, all other things being equal in my opinion. I would recommend uprating the flywheel at the same time though - It's one thing which concerns me - how long will my oem flywheel (although machined down to mate to my clutch) last with lots of power?

Hopefully, I will soon have addressed the issue of both the clutch AND flywheel. ;)
