Creaking Dashboard

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Any ideas why my dashboard on my 2001 Y reg Fabia creaks so much? I didn't even notice it until my mechanic friend pointed it out.

I've read some other similar sites where people have pointed this out. The consensus seems to be that most learn to live with it.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Don't live with it! Take the centre vents out and pack have a wine bottle cork in the brace at the back... it will stop the creak.

If you want more info do a search and you will find a picture guide!

This is a recognised problem. I had it on my previous Fabia. There is a bracket in the middle of the dash that comes loose. Fortunately, I had mine done under warranty. Do a search on the forum and you will find out about it.

I think it's a metal bracket that rubs against the plastic of the dash? Chap who fitted my evap temp sensor kindly stuck some silicone sealant on it when he refitted the dash :D

Yup. Same symptoms as mine had. I spent ages trying to tackle something superficial - like head unit, heater controls, rubbing console etc. As soon as I mentioned it to the dealer, he knew exactly what it was without even listening to it. I booked it in and they fixed some bracket somewhere near the bulkhead. It was under warranty, so I don't know what the cost would be.

Don't worry if it isn't under warranty - can be done yourself in approx. 45 minutes. And that was one of the most satisfying 45 minutes I ever s[ent with our old Fabia !:)

It would be useful to explain how you did it, what parts are required etc for those that have this problem.

Hi everyone.

Well, I took the air grill off yesterday and saw said bracket. I took a cork as suggested to prop between the metal bar and the dash.

Just as I was fiddling with the cork, it slipped and now it's lost in the bowels of my dashboard somewhere....

Needless to say I was annoyed, but then my father in law had a look at it and gave it a good whack: Seems to have solved the problem...for now.

 usually my answer when things start to wind me up lol.

the creaking is so annoying i have my cds on all the time so never notice it any more :D

mine has started to creak ****ing me off so bad mines still under warranty so think i need to get mine booked in

Mine did this. They took the whole dash out and refitted it again. No more creaks. They also told me that they correctly fitted the wiring loom in the right place in the bulk head!!

I had the vents out of my 2001 combi yesterday, but I couldn't for the life of me see what I was supposed to be fixing ... I couldn't see the bracket people talk of, and when I tried to move the vent hoses a little there was a ping as some little clip flew off.

On the bright side I managed to fix the vents that I broke punching the dash to stop the rattle whilst driving (cough!), on the downside the dash is still creaking!

I don't have a photograph to hand, but if you take the vents off and shine a torch in, as far back and up as you can see there is a bracket of metal in amongst all the plastic. Pack that really tightly with whatever soft material comes to hand (I used a paper towel from the men's bogs at work) using a long screwdriver with a large enough head not to spike straight through the material you are using. I too tried the cork thing, twice, and it dropped off both times.
