Auto Express Car Polish Mega Test

Featured Replies

Car polish | Products | Auto Express

It was very close at the top, with Turtle Wax's Extra Gloss narrowly taking the title from fellow non-abrasive sealant and stablemate Gloss Guard, and Comma's champ from last year.

However, the third-placed Top Gloss is our favourite conventional polish. It's ahead by a clear margin from the Simoniz Original Wax and CarPlan's Nanomeric Sealant.

Top five car polishes

1. Turtle Wax Platinum Extra Gloss

2. Turtle Wax Gloss Guard

3. Comma Car Polish

4. Simoniz Original Wax

5. CarPlan Nanomeric Paintwork Seal & Protect

Polishes are abrasives to correct paint defects

WAX and sealants are used to seal the paint!

This is why few people in this country know how to look after their cars. Even Auto Express gets it wrong

I'm not a detailing nut myself but I posted it to show how they prefered the mass market easy to use durable products over the higher spec stuff that enthusiasts use. The Megs, Mothers, Poorboys and Pinnacle products that were tested come nowhere. In fact the higher prices seem to be a problem for Auto Ex.

I was just wondering what other thought of this test.

Any idea what price range the ones that came out top are? Just wondering how they compare price-wise to products from AG, Meguiars, Poorboys etc

I only quoted the summary bit. If you follow the link at the top of the post there's all 50 products with price and star rating. It seems that the main things they wanted were cheap, easy to apply and long lasting rather than bling.

for example:

Turtle Wax Platinum Extra Gloss

tbh, I've never been impressed with the turtle wax stuff, and I bought some a little over a year ago for it's liquid ease of application.

Sure looked great when done - for about 10 minutes till it rains. Then it just seems to streak like crazy.

There is nothing in this world I've found yet than to clay bar a car in preparation for a good coating of Swissol Onyx. Pricey, difficult to work with, but a shine/gloss that is mirror-like coupled with no need to do anything to it for a month or more - dust, grit, flies etc, just brush off.

Spot on. Just what I use. Its expensive, but nothing beats it!!

difficult to work with

I think its really easy to work with. You must be putting too much on ;)

Having looked at the whole review, they seem to be confusing what they're actually testing. There seem to be all-in-one products in there, trying to combine the cutting property of a polish, with the protection of a wax. These are alongside traditional waxes and polishes. So I can't see how they can be tested properly, when they're all not offering the same thing!

To me, that sort of test will just confuse the average punter. For example, I use Meg's Gold Class which I find to be excellent AND durable. I can still have beading after 3 months...

Their findings on Meguiars are contary, however. So I presume this must be down to surface preparation. If the paint isn't clean and clear of contaminents, you can't expect the wax to be able to protect properly.

Bit disappointed in Auto Express really; their tests are usually very good - bulb testing etc.

Did they comment on Auto-Glym, my favoured producer. Resin Polish followed by Extra Gloss sealant stuff. Very nice and not over much effort.

My favorite car wax is TAIHO KOGYO Ion coat wax:

Super gloss , water repellent wax, very easy application. One application lasts few month.

I treat my car, and 2 cars of my friends with one bottle.

IMO there is a trend in their product tests and over the years, Turtle Wax successes across various applications and tests has been mirrored by the level of Turtle Wax advertising in the mag. Call me a cynic but ..........

 - you've spotted that as well then!
