Advice Needed - Towbar Electrics

Featured Replies

I've bought a Genuine Skoda towbar and plug-in electrics kit for my Mk1 Octy Hatch.

I managed to get the bumper off and the towbar mounted O.K but the electrics have me a little confused.

There is a separate flasher unit which via the loom supplied in the kit, connects to the right and left light cluster. No problems with that. There is also a white and green wire which is to be connected to the reversing sensor if fitted. I don't have this and so this wire needs taping up as per the instructions.

My problem . . .

There is a single wire - red/blue stripe with a spade connector which exits the towbar loom at the position of the left light cluster connector. There is no mention of this in the instructions and I'm baffled as to what this is for.

Also, I am unable to find a power socket in the back of the car. The kit comes with a single long red lead which has to be run up to the fuse box under the steering column, however, the instructions suggest that this is unlikely to be necessary as there will most likely be a power connector off the loom in the back of the car - I can't find it!!!!

Has anyone else fitted this kit and if so, where did you take your power from??

Thanks very much for any advice

I can picture some, although not all, of what you have.

What sort of guage is the power cable? If it's pretty heavy stuff then could it possibly be for the second socket which could be fitted for charging caravan batteries.

Could you scan in the instructions for me to have a look at - It might help.

I would have thought that power could be sourced from the rear fag lighter socket (if fitted to the hatch).

It depends on how much current is required - You can't just go randomly connecting to anything you find with power supplied to it.

I didn't find anything to do with this either so just left it, does not cause any problems.

The seperate flasher unit stops the load being drawn off the car flasher which I believe had led to them being overloaded. It is this unit that needs the power. If you have one of the higher spec models there is a cigarette power socket in the back left trim in the boot which you can just plug into. If you don't have a socket you have to run the power cable to the front of the car.

You will need to connect to a permantly live feed, so the hazard lights will work with the engine off. I can't see them drawing much power so, possibly the stereo feed will be fine.

.

I was puzzled by this wire but concluded that it couldn't be important . . . .there's nothing to connect it too.

I'm well miffed that there's no plug in the back. I was led to believe that there would be a power socket under the carpet trim by the nearside wheel arch where vehicle loom enters the boot space.

Does this mean ripping all the carpets out to run the power lead up to the front:confused:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

The instructions refer to the power socket which is present in the boot dependant on model spec. Some have it and some dont. If the power socket aint there then the wiring isnt either.

In past experience (not octavia) the easiest way to run wires is by down the side simply unclipping the trim which holds the carpet in and slipping it underneath.
