How much smoke does yours kick out?

Featured Replies

Uphill, 3rd gear to about red line, overtaking Pug 106. Look back and there was a large cloud of smoke. Car then settles down... Seems to be smoking more than usual lately.

Car is slightly away from standard....

Yep, my Fabia was a smog monster when it was remapped, worse in the hotter weather as the intercooler struggles to keep up. Perfectly normal mate!

All you can do to help things is use the best fuel you can, try the pikey mods, upgrade the intercooler, improve the air intake... ;)

I wasn't overly worried bout my car (has been a smoker since new, but seems to be worse nowadays - maybe because its the 1st summer since remap??) but the poor old dear in the 106 must have wondered where to go in the smog?

Lights on?? :)

You need to change up much earlier to make the most of your torque, say 3500, no point in red lining a diesel.

Ummm, no comment. ;)

I find the smog comes as the engine comes on boost, and not higher up the revs anyway...

FWIW, my Passat hasn't smoked a puff... wonder if it has a DPF :rubchin:

The Passat exhaust points downwards and hits the asphalt where as the Fabia emits it's smog directly out the back so you are less likely to notice it.

Mine does smoke but only if I give it some beans lower down the rev range, once between 2500 - 3500 it smokes but not excessively.

Not when remapped my good man. Pulls right to the red line... :)

if you've been cruising along for a while , there will be a build up of soot , which will obviously be ejected out the back when you give the engine some stick

also check your air filter , it may be blocked

Depends on the shape of the torque/power curve. No point in changing up into a flat spot and that's what the standard curves seem to have around the 3K mark.

Been doing some thinking on this too... :D Part of which may gainsay the previous paragraph

For a car running the standard intercooler, will the fuel that is pulled by the ECU due to high inlet air temperatures affect the power enough to make it advisable to change up earlier, particularly on long pulls in higher gears?

J.

when remapped , the torque curve is made fatter and the power can be moved further up the rev range

its not always the best policy to change up early as this can put extra strain on the flywheel/clutch especially with a remap

Exactly. Im terrified about flooring it anywhere below 2.5k!!!

mine has been smokier recently... but I think it's just down to the warmer weather.....

None really, but it's standard... I only notice anything in the rear headlights of cars behind if its dark, but not enough to see during the day

mines been smoking less, especially after the first service. all standard

If you blank off your egr wouldn't that cut down on smog a little. I for one would prefer a car to run on clean air instead of recycled....

Mine smokes a little on startup and when the turbo comes on boost. I think you notice it more because of the shape/angle of the tailpipe.

You'd think.... There's video evidence of mine - and I had blanked off the EGR at this point too. :D

whats an EGR?

I guess the smoke is just unused fuel as mine doesnt seem to use any oil?

Mine never smoked. Suppose it's the way it's mapped accordingly to the modifications.

mine doesnt tend to smoke well nowhere near as bad as my other car it will give jasons mongrel a challenge as it produces clouds of the stuff !!!

Try a few tankfuls of BP Ultimate. Deffo minimises smoking for me...

i dont get any real smoke, only a haze really........... and mine is far, far from standard. :)

Running 100% Bio it smokes more but the smoke is more grey
