Decisions Decisions vRS or TDi

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

Currently got a Subaru Impreza (I know I know but at least its the estate version) Same old story - it's costing me too much money in petrol, tyres, servicing etc.

Thought I would join the trend of scooby owners moving over to the Skoda camp!

Initially I was looking at the Oct vRS (with chip of course) to replace the scooby, but the more I think about it - will I be actually saving anything in petrol costs?

Then I started thinking about the TDi versions (again with a chip) as they are far more economical (but maybe not being chipped and giving me the ability to floor it)

Advice needed! What would be the ideal TDI engine with chip to give me the mid range overtaking I so need and crave!! Or should I go vRS?

I can vouch that although a chipped PD100 is fun, it's not any more economical than a standard vRS, and I doubt much more economical...

and if it's mid range punch you're after I can vouch that third gear becomes one HELL of an overtaking gear once chipped. :D Starting from 20mph, flooring it just makes the car take off and before you know it you'll be up at around 75mph in no time.

Geckz,

Welcome to the board. :wavey:

Right, I think I can provide an answer / solution for you in your dillema. The answer is at the top left of the screen in a banner - what are you doing 24th April? :D

We are having a trackday for members of this board (yes you are one, and therefore can come out to play :D ). Amongst those going there are 1 or 2 standard RSs, a lot of chipped ones (with different flavours of chip, although mainly Jabba) and quite a few modded 130TDIs (OK they're Fabias, but hey it's the same engine). I'll also be there in my new one. I'm sure people would be happy to take you out for a spin (just don't go with Jason or it may be literal :D ). There are also a few Scoobs going, mainly STI8s so you'll get a comparison.

So, that's the performance covered. As to economy, well mine averaged over the course of its life 30.2 mpg. This was made up of 126k road miles and about 10.5k track miles, so not that bad. On a run, cruising at 80 I'd get about 38mpg, fast A roads about 32, round town about 29, UK tracks about 10-12, Ring as low as 6 :D

All depends what you want. Something sporty or something "sensible". I've done sporty, now I'm doing sensible. Finding it hard to learn to drive a diesel though, but it's nice to pootle along :D

Do a search on here, there are quite a few people who have swapped from Scoobs to Tavias, normally for cost reasons. Most find that once they've learnt to drive them they are fairly equal to their old Scoobs in terms of performance (save for off the line and exiting tight corners). I'm sure some of them will pipe up.

I'm sure people would be happy to take you out for a spin (just don't go with Jason or it may be literal :D ).

:finger::rofl:

Roll up, roll up - see the amazing performing yokel!

I know jack about Tavia RSes (only ever been in one, but was effin quick ;) ) and even less about scoobs, but I think they're "similar" - especially when the tavia is chipped, but the Tavia RS will be nearly as quick (or quicker if you seriously mod it), but 10 times as comfortable. Probably will drink a little less, but not that much however, you'll save a fortune on servicing and reliability is top notch (just ignore the blown engine Jon (TaviaRS) ommited to mention :D )

I have a Fabby vRS and love it to bits. Probably not at quick as a Tavia RS (I'm gonna get shot by my fellow siblings for saying this) but very very economical (about as much as Jon's new SDi !!!) but stil loads of fun. And only group 9 insurance and 55mpg makes running it real cheap for a "performance hot hatch".

If you can make it on the 24th, come along. As Jon said, there'll be loads of Tavias and Fabias in all kinds of modded state from standard to extreme!

Dunno where you're based. If around Basingstoke / Hampshire, we have a little meet tomorrow (Wednesday) and you're more than welcome to come along, have a look and a ride in mine ;) See here

Oh, and nearly forgot - Welcome ...to the dark side Muahahaha

Having driven a "mildly" modded RS ;) I'd say that a chipped TDI isn't anywhere near as quick :(

I echo that sentiment but then define "mildly" ;) In my book (if we're talking about Graeme's yellow peril) that would be quite a mod. :D I would still like to think that although the standard vRS and chipped TDI have similar book BHP figures (given vRS traditional under-estimates) the chipped TDI is programmed to rev better than the standard vRS. (i.e better ability to be "revvy") - Just my opinion.

BTW - If anyone's up for it (cough, Graeme) I'd like to know what the Chipped vS Furby feels like at Brunters. :D

I went from a STI3 Wagon, 292 horses, sub 20 mpg, One Engine in 30,000 miles, head gasket blew (

Not to worry...we got this one covered....roof rails with castors on. ;)

Cheers for all the input guys!!!!

I had an MR2 Mk1 supercharger before the scooby - had it for 9 years and it was modified up to 200bhp - however a 90mph stag impact kinda wrote the car off (and exploded the stag messy-like)

I bought the scoob originally cos I wanted a 4wd or rwd car (not being too keen on fwd) However I find I'm not bothered so much amymore.

Really I'm looking for cheaper insurance, petrol and servicing - but with the ability to overtake when I need to :)

I'm being more attracted to the Fabia now as it has the vRS TD. Hmmmm so many cars so little time

tftboy - when/ where are you meeting up I'd love to be subjected to a test ride in the fabia!! (I'm based in Reading)

Oh and it's tomorrow night 6-6:30

And if you pop along to Bruntingthorpe on 24/4/04 there'll be two (IIRC) Jabba'd PD100s for you to compare to the standard vRS. (andy ellis and me I think). I can't make it tomorrow because I'd need to do about 240mph to make it from Devon to that pub in the time I have from end of work to 6.30... :D

if you dont want to track it... go tdi if you do go petrol....

as for Furby / Octy... depends whether you are a boy or a man?

if you have family commitments then go Octy.

Details are in the thread Jon linked.

I live in Reading (well, Tilehurst) so you'd be welcome to come and have a look at mine in the flesh this evening if you want. Just let me know (PM or catch me on MSN)

I'm sure Adrian can post the postcode of the Leather Bottle. It's close to M3 J6. You should be able to cut cross country on the A33 coming from Reading. I seem to have lost the directions... :(

Jeff posted directions in the thread.

Quick directions are:

Come down A33 towards Basingstoke.

Turn left opposte Wellington Monument.

Turn right a first round-about.

Follow road until you come to The Leather Bottle on left hand side.

I'm sure I could let you have a ride Jason, even though its not up to Graemes bhp (yet)

Dosen't stop you normally though does it!

 - thankfully there's no roundabouts around the circuit!

Looks like I may have organised another pre 24/4/04 modification - one which should actually have an effect on BHP... :D

oh, and I don't necessarily have to be on four wheels to do that speed. [cough]

you have the chip, the Green filter, the airbox mods so that leaves:

An intercooler

new turbo

Milltek Exhaust

is there anything else i've missed?

or is it...

Dump valve holes, go faster spoiler, burberry baseball cap? with all these mods you could get 800bhp at the wheel!!! :D

so that leaves:

Milltek Exhaust

Not far off, mate! :D But I'm not sure about anything yet until I hear back and get

It works better with TDI diesels as they are easier to get power out of than petrols (As you know) but it's only a few bhp although you get a slight reduction in torque (as if you will miss any!), should go well with the exhaust as it will make it even more free flowing.

BTW - If anyone's up for it (cough, Graeme) I'd like to know what the Chipped vS Furby feels like at Brunters. :D

I can't see a problem with taking you out for a run at Brunters mate.

Car feels a bit livlier now that the Green filter has been fitted. Just need an exhaust, then a re-re map to free up even more. Perhaps a hybrid turbo and a fmic too! :D

Alledgedly the one from a crash damaged Golf 150PD would fit, along with the pipe work ;)
