macmini: replace internal hd or go for an external one?

Featured Replies

planning on using my macmini as a media hub of some sort...

currently got the standard 5400rpm 80gig drive installed, with 2gig spare! seen this little 250gig external drive for http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=3TV1

would it be better to replace the internal drive to something bigger and quicker? or go for the firewire drive?

would it be worth using the firewire drive as the os drive as it spins quicker?

I have an external firewire (with combined hub for usb/firewire) harddrive for my videos, but am not using it to boot off. Speedwise, the 7200rpm drive will make a good difference though if you skip the mini's internal hdd.

 2gig spare

You need at least 15% really to use as a swap file area IMO. Good job your looking for a new HD :D

Ive got one of these for the big stuff, such as movies, pics and music & full back ups:

Clicky

And one of these in the car for mp3's : clicky

And have just ordered a 2.5" case for my old laptop's hard drive

You might as well go external, that way you can move files about much easyer too

OOOooh, how about one of theseLaCie Big Disk Hard drive 1 TB

The mac mini uses laptop sized 2.5" drives.. the biggest 7200rpm one I've seen is 100Gb (Travelstar 7K100).

Personally I'd got for an external drive at just over £10 more for more than twice the space it would be silly not to. :D

I would leave the OS on the internal drive though and just use the firewire drive for storage.

go for an internal its only a 5 minute job to change but it depends on how much crap....err i mean things you need to store on there

The biggest internal drive is either a 200Gb 4200rpm SATA at £111 or 160Gb 5400rpm PATA at £80.. depending on which mac mini you have.

Either way external is much cheaper and bigger than either of those drives...
