I've done 450 fairly steady miles since picking up my vRS and it's used 0.5 litre of oil already. I know these PD diesels can be thirsty when running in, but I'm wondering what other peoples experiences are?

It's a good job I check regularly and it makes you wonder how mnay of these cars get run nearly dry during the run in period.

i put almost a litre in mine this weekend. 8k miles.

Put about a third of a litre in after 1500 miles.

Probably depends on how full it was when you got it.

Edit: Hope it doesn't use too much - It's chuffing expensive stuff that PD oil!

What oil are you putting in. The dealer gave me castrol SLX Longlife II, VW spec 506 01. It's going to be expensive running-in this thing.

Hmm, not sure that is the right one. According to the manual, it should be 505.01 spec, not 506.01. That is assuming your Furby is set up for fixed length servicing intervals (I think they all are, but you can check in your service book).

I got mine from the local VW dealer, it is VAG own brand stuff with the VW, Seat, Skoda and Audi logos on, spec 505.01 specifically for the PD engines. COsts about 11 quid a litre!

I'm hoping that being over spec is o.k. I must admit the parts man didn't fill me with confidence

From the conversation in the thread about variable servicing, it seems that the standard of dealer knowledge varies quite dramatically. Not sure what the impact of using the long life oil is.

Mine used up a litre in 8000 miles, but seems to have settled down a bit now. Used half a litre in the first 1000 miles! :eek:

Not sure what oil I'll use when I get my service done. May go for Mobil 1 diesel. VAG approved, but expensive.

About 50 miles to the gallon isn't it.

I rang the skoda customer line tonight, just to put my mind at rest and they said topping up with 506 01 was ok., but it does seem to have the dealers really confused. Mine thought the car was on variable service, but the engine code says not.

Is Mobil 1 diesel approved for 505.01 or 506.01? If not, it should only be used in older tdi engines, not pdi as fitted to most current Skoda diesels.

Confusion reigns!!!!!!!!

The dealer's rung again and said that 506.01 probably wasn't the right oil, but it won't do the engine any harm in the quantity I've added. They have found an oil that they think is suitable, based on vicosity, but I'm sure the only thing that really matters is getting the right spec i.e. 505.01 (a pd oil I believe)

Help me guys. Are there any Skoda techies out there that can help clear this up. Skoda U.K. don't even seem sure themselves.

Look at Page 174 in your Owner's Manual. It's quite clear. If your car has extended flexible service intervals you should not mix different oil types - quote

"You can mix various oils together with each other when refilling with oil. This does not, however, apply for models with extended flexible service intervals (QG1)".

So this means that you can top up with either 506.01 or 505.01 if your car has fixed service intervals.

It also states very clearly the oil types that must be used for PD (pdi) engines so why Skoda technical can't give you a straight answer is very odd.

Sometime ago I spoke with VW engineering and was told that all new VAG pdi engines are filled at the factory with 506.01. When the customer orders the car a decision is made whether it should have fixed or variable service intervals and the vehicle computer is programmed by the dealer accordingly. I understand that all UK diesel Fabias are programmed for fixed service intervals (10,000 miles or 1 year). Apparently most Fabias are bought by people who do less than 10,000 miles per year so variable service intervals could be very lengthy - this would probably upset the servicing profits for Skoda dealers!

Excellent, thanks for that. So it seems I'm o.k. with 506.01 top up, although my dealer has changed his mind since selling me the oil. I don't think I'll tell them and see what they can come up with next, might even be sewing machine oil, they've tried everything else!!!

Oil Consumption.....

Mine used a bit in the first 4000 miles, was topped up, and hanst used a drop ever since :) they all use oil when running in.

You might want to check one more thing:

On the inside cover of your Service Schedule booklet there should be a large sticker with a bar code on it; the same sticker should also be in the boot of the car somewhere near the spare wheel. Look at the bottom of the left column of digits where you should see a group of 3 digits - this will probably be QGO. This means the car has fixed service intervals. If it's QG1 it means extended, variable service intervals. This is actually explained on page 5 of service schedule booklet.

Been there already. It's a QG0, which means fixed service and usually 505.01, but, as you say, the pd130's come with longlife oil (506.01) so my dealer was lucky and chanced upon it first time. I must admit the oil in the engine is quite brightly coloured and thick, suspiciously similar to the stuff I poured in.
