MP3 bitrate conversion

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a good reliable preferebly free bitrate conversion program please. I have many gigs of MP3 all at 320 bitrate, but for MP3 player playing and CD's for the car thats too big obviously and so need to reduce the bitrate.

So I await your recommendation. Personal experience essential, and please no deviation to useless unconnected drivel....thankyou:)

NB..to add that it needs to be able to batch convert too.

There are many available. Winamp will do it, select the disk writer plugin and play the file.

Converting will reduce the quality quiet a lot though, the quality will be worse than an MP3 file originally sampled at say 192kbps because the file already has some data missing.

Hmm. As Manny said, if you want batch conversion, I'd probably go with winamp. You can compile a playlist then get it working automatically.

However, in my current install of Winamp, I appear to be limited in the bitrates I can chose for MP3 compression: the maximum supported is 56kbit/s 24kHz Stereo.

If you use something like CDex you can manually do a conversion from PCM or mp3 to another mp3 bitrate. Not too sure about how to manage batch jobs though, although if you can stick all the mp3s you want to convert into a directory / subdirectories, then you're all set to go :)

Cheers chaps, I will take a look although TBH I don't fancy using Winamp fro anything other than playing music. I can see Mr Google will be contacted:D

NoteBurner can do this, but it is not free.

Personally i use DBPowerAmp Music Converter CLICKY. It costs $18 so about

CDex for me.... With a combination of Plextools or EAC to rip the bl**dy thing in the first place if the "disc" proves problematic.

Tag & Rename for tidying things up and generally being a cool tool.

:)
