Stalling Felicia!

Featured Replies

Hi all

Have got a stalling dilema with my 1999 (1.3) felicia.

Makes no difference if the engine is either hot or cold.

Starts fine but the instant that you 'stab' the accelerator the engine splutters & its a 50/50 chance that it will cut out. Stopping at junctions usualy results in the engine stalling.

The 'cat' is less than 2 years old & fuel consumption is lousy at 35mpg (max)

Problem has now come to a head, the car failed its MOT test on exhaust emissions (fast idle HC reading):(

Your wise & inexpensive solutions if possible please.

injection cleaner, air filter, exhaust!!!

Yeh sounds like an air intake etc problem...

How does the engine do when u move the car on the clutch and no accelerator or when you switch on the headlights or rear window heater??? basically, how does the engine do when put under load/strain... could be the EGR valve.

Try this site for some info... gives some info about if the valve isnt working why your emissions might be higher

what is the function of the egr valve? Can it be repaired or... - Q&A

:) Start with the basics. Is it running on all 4 cylinders? Check the valve clearances, these are often forotten in these days of low maintenance cars with self adjusting lifters. If the clearances are too small your engine will run poorly. Change the fuel filter too, it's something else that's often forgotten on the Felicia due to it being positioned in a crap place! It's mounted over the fuel tank, and it's quite fiddly to replace, but every one I've ever replaced has been blocked simply due to it being neglected.

As a footnote the engine is pretty low on miles & very lively although I have to confess that is overdue for a service:O

Will give the car a fresh change of fluids & filters plus plugs of course!

In addition I will throw plenty of injection cleaner down its 'throat' then give the emissions another looking at.

MANY THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP THUS FAR & I WILL KEEP YOU UP TO DATE 'AS & WHEN' THINGS IMPROVE (OR NOT):(

The Felicia needs regular servicing, and the things mentioned by the guys above are likely to be the source of your problem.

Let us know if you need any help

SORT OF SORTED.....

SPENT A LITTLE BIT OF 'DOSH' & A FEW PRECIOUS HOURS ON THE BELOVED FELICIA FRIDAY BEFORE RETURNING THE CAR FOR ITS RE-TEST.

CHANGED FILTERS, PLUGS & THREW PLENTY OF INJECTOR CLEANER INTO AN ALMOST EMPTY FUEL TANK BEFORE THRASHING THE NUTS OFF IT EN-ROUTE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED TESTING STATION WITH THE REV COUNTER ETERNALY IN THE RED (WOW! 84mph IN THIRD!....)

RESULT:- CAR NOW HAS A 12 MONTH TICKET & STALLS LESS FREQUENTLY

NOTICED WHILST CHANGING THE PLUGS THAT NUMBER 2 CYLINDER HAD A HEAVY DEPOSIT OF A WHITE-GREYISH SUBSTANCE AROUND THE ELECTRODE.

WHATS THAT ALL ABOUT ????

FINAL WORD CAME FROM MR TESTER MAN "RECKON THAT YOU WILL NEED A NEW LAMDA SENSOR NEXT YEAR"

OH WELL! AT LEAST I HAVE ANOTHER YEARS MOTORING BEFORE HAVING TO ATTACK THE PIGGY BANK WITH MY BUTTER KNIFE ONCE MORE :D

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ONE & ALL FOR ALL OF THE VALUABLE 'POINTERS' OFFERED

my guess is that it's running hot on that cylinder, might be because of a lean fuel mixture caused by a lazy injector

A dodgy lambda sensor might well be the cause of your stalling problem. Completely different engine of course, but I had an Audi a couple of years ago that started stalling like that and it was eventually tracked down to the lambda sensor.

  • 2 months later...

Have had the same problem on both my 1,3 MPI's and it went away after i removed the "airbox" on top of the engine and cleaned the air intake valve. Use a moisted cloth and clean on top, underneath and around. This removed all my problems completely. I learned this from another thread in this forum some time ago.

Good luck!

:iagree:

Also, wrt the lambda sensor, it should show 0.7 on a voltmeter with the engine idling.
