How to get 600+ miles from a Tank in a vRS!

Featured Replies

Get yourselve a puncture on Saturday evening and be forced to drive a long drive on Sunday on the crappy spare!!

55mph-60mph for prolonged motorway periods in 6th gear....still though, the saved fuel money won't exactly cover a new Conti :(

Given the speed limit for motorways is 70mph in ideal conditions then when it rains/icy etc surely you would be driving at these or lower speeds.

huh?? Where in his post did Motorhole say anything about rain/ice?

Is the spare a space saver? Those things state on them you have to crawl along at 55mh maximum. But if it's a normal sized one then why'd you end up going so slowly?

Also, why the mention of snow and ice etc? That comment didn't make any sense.....

No need to go so slow in vRS as its a normal sized spare... :P

oh dear silly mistake.

Mind you my spare is one of those silly bike tyres.....

but doesn't it have a maximum speed limit sticker on it , that states max speed 50 mph

Mine too - and it can get a bit interesting at 50mph in the rain ;) Although saying that, I still think it had more grip than the full sized Conti on the other end of the axle

yeah, but thats just a sticker to cover eventualities such as directional tyres, asymetric tyres, slightly different wieght due to steel instead of alloy.... or a number of other reasons to "cover themselves" .... It's fine to drive it at normal speed..

(Don't sue me though!!! :o )

I've had to use my spare on the front of the VRS. Seemed to go OK. Handles motorways fine at normal speeds.

Agree though, around 60mpg is possible with extreme patience/boredom.

60mpg is possible in mine again now that I have the lpg going - of course the lpg isn't factored into the equation, so I need to add in about 25 litres of lpg every 1200 odd miles too. :D

to answer your original question, it is possible to squeeze in 50 litres, using the vent button to release air in the tank. This sohlud see you a possible 600miles but you'll still need to have a light foot and check your tyre pressures.

I recently managed 537 on 49 litres.

The spare is just a standard VAG 16" steelie in the Fabia. It will be safe to go as fast as the tyre is rated, which if its a OEM Conti, or Bridgestone, is faster than your car will actually go.

600 miles on a tank?

Nice, lucky if i get 300 :)

I know what matey boy was on about with regards to rain and ice!! He's wondering why I havn't already noticed the economy when driving slowly in poor conditions...but I havn't driven on icy roads since I had the car (distinct lack of frosts this winter!!) and unless the rain is particularly heavy I see no need to slow significantly. Besides, I always seem to be in fast/slow traffic in rain on the motorway so always accelerating and easing off - not good for economy.

The tyre is a proper steelie with a Conti sport 2 on it too, but the wheel has the 80kmh speed limit plastered onto the side of it! I assumed this was to do with the rotation of the tyre as it could be on either side of the car...this time was on the wrong side :oD But thanks for the confidence folks, its nice to know I don't have to be so sedate next time...

some of us have seen and experienced your driving Shifty , so you've got no chance of getting 300 miles from a tank let alone 600;)
