Spark Plug Advice needed please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i have been having a splutter problem on my rs since i got it although it has been getting considerably worse of late,

a couple of nights ago i was looking through the service book and have noticed that the spark plugs have never been changed???

I dont know what the usual procedure is with rs's but my car has done 51k and personally i think they will have needed changing before now.

The spark plugs i have seen are the bosch spitfire plugs (i bought these before and like em), does anyone know if there is any "preference" the rs has as to which plugs it gets? or does anyone know the best plugs to use in the rs?

cheers for any advice given,

Chris

I would get some decent NGK ones. I use the Iridium IX in mine and have had no problems. Take a look at sparkplugs.co.uk

They should be changed every 40k IIRC.

Usually

For Stock Cars - .032" gap:

NGK BKR6E

Autolite 3923

Denso Iridium IK20

Torqued at 30Nm (22 ft-lb)

No way would I leave any plugs (iron or copper core; never run noble metal cores) I've ever used in a car for 40k miles, never mind 50k+! I've always changed them at about 12k miles, and definitely feel the engine smoother on pick-up.

Chris, have a word with oilman (on here). Top bloke, top stuff also.

Totally agree!

I can't see the sense in trying to leave plugs and oil in an engine for 20K+ miles.. Plugs are so critical to the engine performing at it's best in all respects.

My choice is NGK BKR6E (or BKR7E for uprated engines) - copper core plugs which are as cheap as you can get, just change them every 8-10K. These will work at least as well as fancy Iridiums etc, in some circumstances they will be better, as the copper core allows heat to dissipate quicker from the hot plug tip, so reducing the potential for detonation. The only benefit the Iridium will give is longer life, that's the only reason VAG fit them, so the service intervals can be seen to be longer.

Since chris has just had a service last week at 51K, Shouldnt they of put NEW Spark plugs In it?? Even more so when his service book says it hasnt had any new ones in its life.

 it wasnt us that was trying to make them last

we have only just looked through the service book to find out that they havent been replaced, having not given it a thought before now because we presumed that it was done in a service, which we had done last week and this is when it was brought to our attention that they wouldnt be replaced, hence why i am asking which ones are best as i would never have left them in that long myself, and i presume the other owners had thought that they were replaced in a service too hence why they never changed them,

thankyou for all your help, i am going to be checking out all your suggestions and sorting it out this weekend,

p.s cheers gtjunior, you know we wouldnt have left them if we had known before

Can we have some pics of the old ones!

 yes it should be interesting to see what they look like shouldnt it

will keep you all updated at the weekend as to what i find out

It wasn't intended personally; just as general advice about plugs.

As I say, I've never run noble metal core plugs, and reckon that platinum or iridium electrodes are only ever there to reduce the rate at which the gap opens or closes. Similar thoughts about multi-electrode plugs, with the note that the spark will always take the shortest path (narrowest gap) from live (centre) to earth.

The limiting factors on plug life are really the decay of the centre electrode body and the insulator anyway.

:) I know it wasn't intended personally, just didn't want people to think it was me that was trying to leave them in that long

MR & MRS nshaunluke would Never let there cars get run down :D Performance and running smoothly is always number one for them.
