Adding side lights

Featured Replies

Hiya all,

Has anyone tried adding sidelights to a fabia is the wiring in and how hard is it to connect up?

Mike :D

depends if you want to do it nicely.. :P did mine by stripping plastic wire from the 501 lights and attaching from there then tape it up again.

fog lights:confused:

Fog lights for when its foggy or reduced visability not for everyday use  It winds me right up!!

Ah... really don't know why you'd want those lights on when it's not foggy - even down pitch black country lanes you only get a fraction more light at the front of the car, so won't help you see any further.

Nope its the secret 150 bhp you get out of it ;):P

yeah, but they don't blind oncoming drivers as much as Xenons do

I don't get blinded by Xenons, but I find myself attracted to them like a moth to a lightbulb... they're so glittery and pretty in their purples and blues....

Youre forgetting one crucial thing here:

The use of fog lights is illegal unless the visibility is reduced to 100 metres or less due to fog or falling snow. The use of Xenons is NOT!!

Factory fitted Xenon headlights are excellant. (full stop) I suspect that most of the "annoying" lights are actually just filament lamps fitted into projector lenses - remember these "filament bulbed" headlights don't get fitted with stabilising mountings. I'm not knocking projector lights, they became essential due to fashion trends and when they are "off" look quite smart - but when they are lit they can be a problem - sorry but its just another example of form over function. Other fact about xenon lights is lower power requirement once they are ignited. One down side is that if your local VW tec gives the alignment adjuster a quick tweak during MOT then sadly the sheared adjuster will cause a long wait for a new light assembly to come from Germany and lots of labour damage to your wallet to strip out and rebuild the bits into the new light assembly. Seems that "poor" plating on the rod causes quite a bit of friction where the rod paces through the back of the housing - result, the first plastic wheel shears free from the rod - !! That hurt quite a bit being as the adverts said that the xenons would outlive the car and the outer "glass" cover is bullet proof is will never suffer from breaking etc!!

There's a thing, why do "we" still get treated to side lights when we can't legally drive with them on in UK - bring back "dim-dip" or some other form of daytime driving lights - sod Europe, "dip-dip" was better than nothing!!!

Does he want to put sidelights in the foglights? I've seen it done on an Ibiza and actually looks really smart. He's got no use of foglights though anymore, but how often do you really use foglights?

Front foglights, well I suppose there is not really many instances when you need them, global warming seems to be bringing more rain > more mist > mist is a bit like fog when you are driving around "out of town". Personally, I think that the front of any car is really its "face", add foglights - as fitted to that model's "top variants" and you mostly get a prettier face - yes/no? I must confess that I have a 2000 Passat 2.8 4motion and would really really like to sort it out with some front foglights aka Audi A4/A6. Got a MK4 Golf kit, pair of A4 foglights and a Chinese Passat B5 foglight & front grill kit (was said to be Japanese - no its Chinese!!), all safely stored away in a cupboard - but one day something will/might get fitted - still thinking about it over 6 years on! Oh and I might even fit that dash mounted CD player as well - and possibly the "lane changer" kit to the indicators!!

Agree'd! although some people still flash me when they think i blind them with my lower sidelight leds .. I swear some people on the road are actually blind..

501's are sidelights (the first click when you switch the light on). I used the connections on this to connect to lower sidelights however if you wanted to connect them to a proper halogen or whatever lights you'd need a relay and a proper switch..

Thanks for the info on fog light usage I wont be going around blinding other drivers just because I want to install them.

the reason I want to install them is because it looks better than the plastic standard covers where the fog lights should go.

Amazed no ones added fog lights to a fabia that doesn't have them as standard looks like ill have to figure it out myself has everyone got VRs`s? :D

as for Xenons couldn't say I find them a distraction as long as they have been leveled correctly some DIY kits are terrible!
