MAF Problems

Featured Replies

Hi

I am having a few niggles with the performance of my car.

And Awesome said it "might" be the MAF slowly failing.

Skoda diagnostics show no fault codes and said they wouldnt until it failed!!

SO

1. Has anyone got Vagcom in the warrington/Cheshire area who is willing to let me plug it in to see if it throws up any faults? (or would this be pointless as Skoda showed none?)

2. Has anyone got a "spare" MAF to that i could try/buy?

3. how much is a new one roughly?

Many thanks

Mike

Mike - what are the symptoms?

It just seems to give up the ghost under full acceleration

you get the turbo kick and then it just flattens out it still goes but not as harsh.

How has this problem come about do you think?

Would it be anything to do with the new air intake?

No mike i had it before the intake mate.

Dont panic

Phew!

Mike, has your car been Jabba'd?

Me, no not yet.

Search MAF or mass air flow meter on www.tdiclub.com

There is a rake of information on there about MAF's.

They are very easily contaminated by airborne micro-particles, never remove the air filter with the engine running and block the air-intake with cling-film if MAF is exposed.

A MAF of mine was killed by an AA guy spraying Easy-Start up the air-intake. :thumbdwn:

They can be cleaned with electronic circuit board cleaner.

Also, disconnect the leads from the MAF, this should greatly improve performance (and prove the MAF is faulty) until you clean/replace the MAF.

I can confirm that this problem does not show-up as a fault on VAG diagnostics tool.

check your hoses too... of one is collapsing under full boost conditions then the sypmtoms would be similar...... however this normally does generate a code... cant remember which... Jon will know:thumbup:

If you after a MAF cheapish give Stuart a call at Euro car parts on 01133 945000 and see what he can offer you (quote the part numbers given above so he can cross reference them.

I bought the Merc MAF element for my diesel for

Brian sorry for the ignorance but, if i disconnect the MAF and it runs better then why have it in the first place? (i can see how it would prove the failure of the MAF) or to answer my own question, does the MAF set itself to a stock setting if disconected? :ne_nau:

DGW: No it hasnt been Jabbad as yet (thursday) Why?

Mike, I wondered if the fault was related to a remap. The car will need to be running properly when you go to Jabba, although they do have experience of diagnosing and sorting out DV and MAF problems. I am pretty sure that they will clean the MAF if necessary as part of the remap, but if it is faulty then you will need to get it changed first.

As far as I can see, the MAFs for the 1.9 diesels are the same price as the ones for petrol engines which makes Mercedes' price an absolute bargain. But the catch is in identifying a compatible Merc MAF for the intended application.

I meant it would run better but not at 100% power and efficiency.

I disconnected mine when it failed and it made driving the car bearable.

I would imagine the ECU sets a "stock setting" with no info coming from the MAF.

Just disconnected it, and to honest i didnt notice any major diference, my idle was lumpier (technical, me!!) but it ran similar, the only thing i noticed was the consumption was down (instant) by about10mpg on normal driving!

So maybe it might not be the MAF, but something else (imagination???) oh well, i will try all of the above ideas. Will ring for the Merc MAF on monday,

Has anyone else tried the merc or other varient of Maf's?

Mike

I dont think the Merc MAF will work on your mate as its for a diesel

Ask him for a price for your car, he should be able to do you a better price than a dealer.

Many Thanks

If you can get VAGCOM hooked up you might be able to tell whether the MAF is on it's way.

I think you can look at the air meter readings and compare what's the actual value and what the MAF "thinks" it is....or something like that.

If you're up at Jabba, Michael will be able to detemine this for you as can see when somethings not performing as expected.

MAFs are a touch cheaper in the States although the part number of that for the 1.8T for the European and US markets might be different. See this thread.

I have an octavia 1.8 20V, at 139000km it suddenly felt like there was no power at all. Acceleration was very poor etc. It felt like my old skoda 130L (It was a great car and very reliable, 159000km with a flat tire as the only problem so I am not complaining about my old skoda) When it was serviced there were no fault codes at all. The fuel filter was dirty and replaced, but there was no real effect. Thanks to the forum I started to think the MAF could be the cause. (I did not even know it existed before) I went to an official Skoda dealer and they told me that at around 120000km the MAF tends to fail but it would cause no fault codes. They had a replacement (new) for the sensorelement itself for 75 euros. They put it in to see if it worked and they would take it bak if it wasn't the problem. But it worked. Like I had a new car. A lot of extra power and acceleration like a rocket.
