Clutch burnout?

Featured Replies

Last night I was trying to see if my new turbo intake pipe made any significant difference when accelerating, however i pressed on the gas but depressed the clutch at the wrong time. The revs were hit the limiter, so i took my foot of the gas and tried to change down a gear but the gearbox was very stiff and I could smell a really nasty stench which i assume was the clutch.

I then pulled over and left the car for a bit and it was fine to drive gear change was back to normal, the smell last for a number of minutes but has now gone.

What was the problem likely to be?

Could the engine be damaged to over revving? I wouldnt think so considering the engine is limited to 7000rpm, while the clutch is fine now.

I recall this happening to Paul at York.

I suspect you've done nothing more than shortened the life of the clutch by a bit, that's all. Bouncing off the limiter shouldn't cause any problems in itself, I reckon.

putting the clutch in doesnt burn it out. letting it out does.

didnt kill it at york ...killed it on the way......:D

As Jason says you'll have burnt some of the friction material on the clutch away. It will bed itself back in so no damaged done. I've given my clutch some serious abuse towing and it keeps on coming back for more - I'm used to the smell of singed clutch!

The smell was foul! How can I avoid this in future? Not to pull the clutch up so quick?

Change gear then accelerate
