My handbrake button is doin my head in!!!

Featured Replies

My handbrake button rattles in the handbrake when going over any road other than dead smooth.

Took me ages to find the rattle - first thought it was coming from the steering wheel, the airvent , then radio, but it was the handbrake button all along. travels funny noise dont it!!

Anyone got a fix for this annoyance?

Steve H.

I had this approx two years ago when my L&K was new.

Local dealer squirted some thick stodgy white grease inside (after dismantling the assys).

This cured it, little ol squeak never come back - yet!

Just make sure that the button operation is not hindered in any way or you run the risk of finding your car at the bottom of a hill from where you last parked it.

Had my vRS a month ish now and that is the only thing I have to complain about too! Only thing i can thing to stop it is...dunno, what the chap above just suggested seems like a plan, but it seems like it's just a bit loosely connected to whatever it is.

I believe that on the MK I octy there is a piece of rubber, i guess kind of like an elastic band around the button.

This works its way off and you get the rattle.

To fix it the dealer said it was a whole new handbrake lever .

Failing that you might be able to get a suitable piece of rubber/heat shrink etc over the base of it.

Or just use a folded piece of paper like I do.:)

I stuffed a small bit of blue tak between the button and housing.

Mine is fine :D :P

I bet it starts rattling now

Thanks fo all your suggestions guys - am thinking of a small suitably sized 'O' ring like what you egt in plumbing fixings might be the trick - i am going to look in my garage bits box now!!

Got the same problem. took me 18 months of hitting everything in the front from radio, glovebox, steering column gearstick, before realising it stopped when i rested my hand on the handbrake.

Not much chance of curing it as I've never been much good at stretching bits of rubber over sticking out knobs!:D

derek

Yeah an ex of mine found it while having a hissy fit, was a good exchange I thought :)

I think a bit of suitable heat shrink could work. You would need to put it over the thing cut short enough that you just cant see it, then blow hot air in from a hair dryer.

O ring seems like a cheaper solution thought and I don't know how well the heat shrink would do as a damper anyway.

Go with the silicon grease idea. Just squirt some up the gap at the top. It will stop straight away.
