Silent stalling car

Featured Replies

Last night I went out to pick a mate up and after about 10 mins driving got to his house where I pulled over at the side of the road, with handbrake on and in neutral. Only when I went to pull away did I realise the engine had stoppped, but there was no loud noise or clunking when it did it (otherwise I would have noticed). The only light visible on the dash was the battery light. I restarted it ok and been fine since (driven it twice since then). Anyone got any idea what it could be and should I be worried?

was the oil pressure light on??

Nope, the only light visible on the dash was the battery light

then i should imagine you accidently bumped the key into the accesory position... and hence the engine stopped

if the ignition is in the start position and the engine isn't running, the oil pressure light should be on because there's no oil pressure

Wondered about that cos on my Furby(Classic 1.4 td) --ign on - various light come on,including oil, then most go out , including oil. Quick check of Owners Manual (p32,) "warning light comes on for a few secs, when ign is switched on" (vehicles with information display - only comes on if a fault exists or oil low).

I've found If you under rev the 1.9tdi down to about 500rpm it'll silently stall rather than going with a fight. Noticed it coming off a motorway and leaving it in gear by mistake, didn't noticed until I tried to set off again.
