Smokey TDI Octavia 110

Featured Replies

Hi everybody,

This is my first post .. I have had my Octavia TDI elegance for nearly 3 years and just recently I have noticed when I start the car with a cold engine I get quite a substantial puff of white smoke .. Sometimes the car seems to only fire on 3 cylinders as it runs really lumpy for about 2/3 seconds then all is fine.. Has anyone else encountered such issues .. The engine has only done 28000 miles !! If not does anyone have a clue as to what might be going on ..

Any help much appreciated !

Regards

The Stig.

If it's different to normal I say get a dealer to look at it (from cold start, which could be awkward) To be honest though my two TDI Fabia's have always disliked cold starts in the winter, but I put that down to being diesels. :D

Sounds like a glow plug problem, whereby the cylinders arent heated properly prior to firing. Does it run ok when warmed up?

Yep sounds like a glow plug problem to me too, or maybe a sticking injector.

I used activate the glow plugs a good two or three times on my Pug 205 on really cold mornings, before starting. The extra heat seemed to ease cold starts.

I believe that caues more damage, I had a Felicia 1.9D and the Glow plugs failed and dealership made it clear that they only need to run once, wait then start!
